Don't overlook a late Mark III. This thing really gets it done, but you get the extra channel, Rhythm 2, that can be set for crunch. But let me tell you, R2 gets pretty nasty on its own. Last band practice I set up R2 almost identical to Lead, but made Lead just a little bit louder. Naturally...

I paid $800 for my loaded blue stripe about a month ago. And you're right, R2 is quite a thing. Wasn't expecting it. :shock:

What MrMarkIII wrote. and....I think your Lead Master is too low. Try this. Put the Lead Drive on about 4 or 5. Or back it off just to the point where it looses a bit of fuzz. Then run the Lead Master up to about 6 or 7. See how that tone feels. Now add back more Lead Drive to get some more...

The only thing that I can think of is that the distorted tone you like so much is mostly pre-amp gain that you're getting at low volumes while running the gain up. Then when you turn up the amp, the power tubes are coloring the tone more. This might cause you to loose some of that pre-amp...

The BB preamp is a **** nice pedal. Not that I really use pedals much for distortion, but the CATMOD Brownie really hits the spot. Forget all the Brown Sound crap. It's a nice pedal.

They sound pretty identical to me. And nice pickup on the Mark III. :shock:

To which amp are you speaking? The Vintage/Modern thing has me a bit confused. In all fairness, the last newer Marshall I have heard was the DSL100 about 10 years ago. I am more experienced with the 4 input versions, some modded and some not. I don't think I have ever played a JCM900???

You cannot get a DR to sound like a Marshall. EL-34's won't even get you close. However, the Brit mode of my Road King gets pretty close to sounding like a 4-input non-master volume Marshall. Whether or not it nails the Plexi tone per se is subjective.

My guess would be about $600.
