The problem seems to be rectifier tubes in the LSS's going prematurely.

Hi!

I'm considering a Lonestar Special Combo, but this frightens me off a little.
Could you please give me some more details on this issue?
Is it a bad layout/can it be fixed somehow?

Best regards

The early LSS's had an issue with blowing their rectifier tubes. Mesa fixed the issue a long time ago. Can't remember the serial number of the fix off the top of my head, but it's been two or three years since it was implemented.

Great amps, but you should check out the Electradyne if you can.
+1000

An Electra Dyne might be exactly what you want based on what you are describing. The cleans are fender blackface and absolutely fantastic. Vintage Low is good for blues and crunch chording while Vintage high covers breakup right up until almost high gain. Great for soloing and early metal a la sabbath. The distortion sounds like a plexi hotrodded to hell. It is less bright or brash. The tone is liquid, fat and huge!!

There is a series of 3 videos on youtube with Andy Timmons demoing his rig which consist of a Lone Star Classic and Stiletto. If you're an AT fan like me you'll enjoy it, if not you might pick up more insight into the two different amps. It's about his whole setup, not just the Mesas.

Good luck on your quest. Electo Dyne, another good choice by the way.
