Should I have my amp converted to a removable power cable?

Hey guys, I've got a '95 Tov head and I've been debating having a tech convert it to a removable power cable. The fixed on is annoying and always in the way, makes it a pain to move around, etc.

Thing is if I did that I'd have to have the chassis cut to allow for the connector.. Should I just leave it alone or would it be worth it to convert?

Invest in some zip-ties or Velcro straps (even try attaching it to the back of the amp) so you can roll up the cable and keep it strapped it in place for easy transport.

Nice! How do you have them attached? Just drilled into the bar?

That's not my amp, just a pic I found.

I would bolt them right to the back bar.

This is what I did with mine to hold the cable in place. I use a Planet Waves elastic cable tie to wrap the power cable. You can use Velcro ties if you like.

Very nice! I love how you have the gizmo back there as well. I didn't know that the roadster series had a fixed cable. Did it come stock with that grille on the back or did you add that as well? Mine has the aluminum bar on the back.

The gizmo is cable tied on the grille. As far as I know, the grille is standard. Mesa must've changed from bar to grille at some stage or maybe it was a requirement for Australian sale (?) I just saw two for sale in a local ad. One has the exact same grille as my amp and the other one is slightly narrower in height because the amp has an IEC power cable (removable power cable) This narrower grille has a larger gap at the bottom between the chassis and the grille edge. Both types of grille are held on by the four screws that you can see in my photo.

I say if it annoys you convert it. I hate people who say dont change because it isnt broken. If it wasnt an issue it wouldnt be pissing you off. I actually am surprised your amp doesnt have a removable cable. That would drive me crazy.

The Roadster most certainly has a removable power cable. The IEC connector is mounted on the top side of the chassis, and a plastic cable clamp is securing the power cable to the head shell.

The full back grill was for exports to meet European & other countries safety codes, the USA versions used to get the aluminum back bar. Now they all get the aluminum cage AFAIK.

I love the grille. It complements the overall look IMO, even though we don't always spend the time looking at the back of the head 8)

You're correct. It has the IEC cable.

Put the head in a "Live In" road case and the non removable cable wont be a problem any longer.

Or roll the cable towards the amp from the socket end and tuck it under the handle when not plugged in. Carry the head using both hands. Handles can break at any time resulting in dropping a $1000+ amplifier to the floor or down a set of metal fire stairs (Ask me how I know this....). These amps aren't worth the headache to repair if that $7 handle breaks at the wrong time. Especially if you are touring and only brought the one amp and have more than a week left on the tour.
