I've been trying to figure out why my amp is giving me a loud hum so for the last couple of days I have it out of it's case and sitting on my bench. I've been turning it over a few times, cleaning sockets, pots, visually checking things out, using a multimeter to check connections and such. Getting to the point where I need to get it to a tech.
Today I go to look at it again and I notice a piece of a resistor laying on the table under the amp. This is driving me crazy because I can't seem to find where this piece came from. The resistors on the tube sockets are all there, and I don't see this anywhere else on the amp. The only possible thing I can think of is it might be on the other side of the circuit board. Are there components on the other side of the board? Can anyone identify where this might have come from? The piece I found was about 1/3 of the total size of the resistor so the remaining part must be there somewhere, but where?? definately red, violet, brown, gold, 270ohm large brown like the ones on the tube sockets. I was also thinking maybe someone changed a resistor previously and this was just a leftover piece that was stuck in there someplace but this isn't even the same size as the other resistors that are there on the tube sockets. Very strange...

Stray parts always make me nervous. Look at the leads...was it thru-hole or surface soldered? Variations of components depends on the version/stripe of your III, but I don't believe anything was soldered on the other side. And certainly not a power resistor like this. But you can't have pieces sliding around a live amp, so it might be a good idea to pull the circuit board just to be sure nothing is stuck underneath.

That's what's strange about this. There's no leads. I just found a piece that shows the color code. So I thought I would see the rest of the component still soldered in place but it's nowhere to be found. The only thing I can come up with is that this piece was just floating around in there. I'll try to take a picture of the actual piece.
