hmm well its the tight low end dark tone of the mark iv that i really like.

The DC-10 with either the High Gain JJ's from Eurotubes or a set of Doug's Tubes would do the trick nicely and you would have a better clean channel with better Reverb.

I have to say though, that I have the Doug's set in my DC-5. I really love what it did for the distortion channel, but it seemed to place a blanket on the clean channel.

I'm going to have to replace V4 today and solve this problem.

Check out the .50 Caliber +

You can get one for $600 no prob. But, saving an extra $100-150 like someone already mentioned and getting a Mark III isn't such a bad idea either, although the .50 Cal + does have more than enough gain and is very tight in my opinion.

i have checked out the .50 cal and i liked the tone but not the clean cuz it was so gainy

well what is the distortion like. Mark iv'sh at all?? like could i get a chevelle tone out of it? plus some bright cleans as well

Think, COC. I am pretty sure that one of the guys in COC still uses them.

As far as comparing to the Mark IV, there is much less gain available. To me, it was a great sounding Classic Rock amp. The only reason that I sold it was because it does need to be turned up quite a bit to sound the way it should. Plus, I do not like the idea of sharing EQ between channels. I use my GEQ for a Solo boost and don't want to always have to leave it on for my distortion tones.

My advise would be DC-10, cos you have a bit more headroom than DC-5 and still have the switch for 60W if it is too loud for you. But anyway the thing with mine DC-10 is when I switch from 60W - 100W it is not that much louder only the sound gets fuller. Go with DC-10 if you find one. You won't regret it.

Yeah,
I would say look for the 10. Give it a few weeks. If you can't find one, get a 5.

Yesterday, I had a shootout between my DC-10 & DC-5.
DC-10 = 2x12 combo w/2 MC-90's
DC-5 = 1x12 combo w/MC-90 & a 1x12 3/4 back Mesa cab w/MC-90 under it

They are pretty close when you pair them up this way. The cleans on the 10 are still just a bit more chimey. The 10 seems to have gobs more distortion, but I think this is due to different preamp tubes.

The 10 has a few original Mesa tubes and some JJ high gains from Bob @ Eurotubes.

The 5 has the Doug's Tubes set, which I am increasingly less fond of.

I wouldn't limit myself to the 60/100 watt version of the DC-10 either. Once you play it in the 100 watt mode, you won't want to switch it to 60. There is not much volume difference, as Bisconne says. There is just a difference in headroom and thump.

My current DC-10 does not have this option and it still kicks ***!

alright i guess it looks like i will be looking for a dc-10. how would one go about trying this amp out. i live in a small town and there are no music shops around me and i would pry have to pay alot to get a brand new one from a shop if i had them ship it in...

They've been out of production for some time now so you'd have to get lucky to find one near you to try out. Just do what most anyone else here does. You've asked you questions and got a lot of good information. Sometimes you just have to buy and try and that will most likely mean eBay or Craigslist. FYI, I learned this from another member on this board about a web site that gathers all Craigslist ads from all over the country. Here is their link set to search Mesa in Texas but of course you can change the state: http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi?cat=mus&itm=mesa&state=TX&fil=&ys=&ye=&submit=++++go++++

The good thing is if you don't like the DC-10, I'd be surprised; you can sell it for what you paid. I have bought many out of production amps this way. In the past three years I've bought and sold too many amps to remember just so I could see if I liked it. Many I would have kept but my budget wouldn't let me. If you buy right you don't have to worry about losing money. Just be sure to buy from someone you trust. I bet if you started a post asking members here how many amps they’ve bought on line just to try out and later sold you’d get a fair amount of responses.

If you find an ad for an amp you like post the link and ask people here what they think of it. We’re all pretty helpful and want fellow members to have a good Boogie experience. Hell, if you find one on line you like and can get the seller’s phone number PM me with the information and I’ll grill them on the amps condition if you are not sure what to ask. I love my DC-10 but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want other amps in addition. No one amp does everything well.

Guitar amps are sort of like women to men. We always want to try another one to see what it’s like. Doesn’t mean we’re going to cheat on our wives but regarding my amp I would certainly have several affairs. Much cheaper than the alimony pony.

I've made it a standard practice to not purchase anything on ebay over $200 if I can't talk to the seller. I even passed on a really nice Lonestar that was a fellow boogie boarder because he left a message on my phone that said he would prefer to communicate through email. If they are full of crap, I want to hear it in their voice.

Here is a good starting point:

How old are the tubes?
What brand or brands are they?
Were they installed by you?
Has the amp ever had any maintenance?
If so, by who?
Has the amp ever been dropped?
Has the amp ever been gigged?
How long have you had the amp?
What type of music have you played on the amp?
Does it come with a footswitch?
Does it come with a cover?
Does it come with a manual?
Do all functions of the amp work?
Have you tried the Loop?
Are there any scratchy pots or sliders?
Are there any broken or stiff pots or sliders?
Why are you selling it if it is such a great amp?

The last one you have to ask a bit gently or some people will get uptight.

Another good one to ask is What type of tones have you been getting out of the amp? This one is hard to describe, so you get a general picture of the person's personallity.

I've also asked people to play the thing for me over the phone if I thought they were full of ****.

Another really good thing to do, if buying from a distance, is ask for more pictures of angles that are not represented on the ebay auction or Craig's Listing.

Phyrexia took some seriously detailed pictures of the inside of the DC-10 that I got from him.

You don't want to piss the guy off if he is legit and the amp is in good shape. But....you do want to make sure that the amp is what you are looking for in terms of condition and playabillity.

If it has problems changing channels, or if the tubes are so old that the guy doesn't remember changing them, you have to assume that there will be a fair amount of maintenance involved and pay accordingly.

Another thing that you have to remember is that the amp is used. Have it in your near future budget to change the tubes. Even though the amp may have brand new tubes installed, you might not like the tone.

Hope this helps.
 Now, if I could only remember all this **** when I buy a car!

Great checklist Monsta-Tone. Many times after speaking with a seller and they're asked directly about any problems either cosmetically or functionally they will open up and share a little more than they may have put in the ad. Above all I find that if I trust my gut feel about someone or there item for sale I'm usually okay. If you pay attention to what and how someone is talking you can learn a lot. When that voice in the back of your head, or where ever yours originates, tells you to run then I say run!

One other thing you should do is grill the seller on how they will pack the amp. When I ship an amp I always remove the power tubes and pack them securely in addition to the amp. You'll be able to tell most of the time if someone has experience shipping heavy items or they just don't have much of a clue.

Insurance: I don't rely on shippers insurance. If you have a claim to make its a pain in the *** asking the shipper to follow through and make sure that the claim is taken care of. I use a third party insurer who deals directly with me if there is a problem. Plus they cover the shipping costs where FedX or UPS won't.

Good catch MJ. I always ask those questions, especially with a combo.
I make sure that the tubes will be removed and individually wrapped as well. I can't tell you how many amps I've seen that have broken tubes due to shipping incidents.

also can i get a tone like this ...
or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv0Hff4ziYc
yea, but you have to go out into the forrest and play to get that tone ;)

but seriously, they're like dropped to A# or something crazy and probably using really heavy gauge strings, which really changes your tone a lot... so, it might be hard for anyone here to really say either way. From what I understand they (Chevelle) use mark4's, but you probably already know that...
