@DECEMBER Great write up! I wonder if the transformer they use in the Marks make any difference to the low end. Or maybe it's just how they designed the filter network. I've got a small 40w Victory Countess (now called Jack) that has such a girth on the lows, it makes the clean notes pop. But, small tranny on that. Funny you mention the Doomy thing because that was one of the goals here when playing with pedals and the Mark. Not that I play doom, but I like to doom every once in a while. :) To combat my pedal-friendliness issue, I had put warmer, darker, and lower gain tubes in it, so right now the channels don't overdive as much as stock, so now it just gently dooms. Heh

I can say that I've heard some of that boxiness on the V90. Especially on the cleans. BUT (here I go...) since the cap and pot mod, it's smoothed out so nicely. If you're not digging how the clean channel dials in, or you find yourself always fiddling with it, I recommend adding a 180k to 480k resistor inline with the cap and changing out that pot for a 100k Linear.

Rather than what I did to mod (remove cap and swap in a 50k pot) the above will keep it closer in the ballpark of the stock sound; the cap will tame the thinning and full-blown treble bleed affect that the volume knob has when set before 1 o'clock, and the pot will reduce the Q(origin of nasaliness) and twitchiness of dialing the top end. Can't speak for the mid control because it was always was kinda smooth and tame for me.

You probably already know this, but the speakers also play such a HUGE role on the mids and upper mids. Speakers like the V30, Creamback, and V-Type have a very decided, mid-frequency bump. They all sound different and accentuate different peaks in the mid-frequency spectrum, but can come across boxy in my experience. I liked the Creamback 75's, but they peaked a little more than the Eminence DV77's did. The DV-77s are a little dark and the bottom end isn't as present, though. With that said, despite being dark, the harshness from the Mark still buzzed at my ears, however, you really had to play at lower volumes to hear it.

Anyway, now you've got me wanting to mess with that Badlander again!

I thought about switching out the bold switch for a 3-way cap toggle. I keep the bold always on anyway. Something like 1 cap value with a resistor, another cap value and resistor, and no cap. Would be a fun, little, reversible mod. My other thought was drilling the chasis and printing out a decal with cute little labeling like "dark, dank, and stank". Heh
