Just posted. Thought I would share. Compared with same settings and mic and cab. Not as different sounding as you would think.

Seems the 2010 just has more presence haha

Great demo. The 2010 definately does sound like it has more presence. It doesn't sound like it has a blanket over the speaker cab like the 2009 model. Thanks for sharing..... :)

Wow... I was just going to post this in the forum, and here it is... a long time coming wouldn't you agree?

Overall I agree with the above comments. The 2010 is tighter, more clear. For any who are interested we had a 4x12 rectifier cab mic'ed off set with a KSM 27 and EV Raven, so both amps got exactly the same cabinet/mic setup.

We will be doing a Dual Rec 6L6 vs EL34 comparison in the next week or two.

Constructive criticism welcome!

I think Haggertys did a fantastic job. In any comparison video, you want a back-to-back same EQ demo. It's very rare you get that (if ever) on YouTube with a few exceptions.

nice side by side video, but the 2009 sounds too dark to me.
i´m using nearly the same setting on orange channel modern mode but i don´t need to turn up the presence that much and it sounds way more open and brighter.
it would be interesting to know, how they recorded the amps.

Thanks for the kind words... and patience! We've been talking about doing this for months.

We had a rectifier 4x12 off camera mic'ed with a Shure KSM27 condenser and an Electrovoice Raven dynamic mic. When recording the different amps, we just swapped the speaker cable around so that the mic's and cab wouldn't get touched. You're pretty much hearing an equal blend of the mics, with the KSM just a little bit hotter. Both mic's were of equal distance from the speakers (I think it was 6"), on axis, and placed almost in between the edge and center of the speaker, going a bit more towards the center side. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

First of all, thanks for doing these awesome comparison vids. They are very informative and helpful. Great tools for people who want to know this stuff but don't have access to music stores where they can demo equipment.

Just a thought, I think tubes are a huge variable in comparison vids. For instance, chances are that an older amp has more worn tubes which will also influence tone. IF you really want to control things, same mics, guitar, player, AND tubes will make it even more scientifically reliable.

GREAT JOB though!

Good point, but comparing amps isn't a science experiment. If someone was shopping for an amp, they wouldnt be able to switch tubes right there in the store. You would simply just play one, and then the other, with the different tubes just adding to the overall differences of the amps, which is what the videos (IMO) are trying to simulate: the guitar shop experience.

And even if they did swap tubes (which I dont think they should), chances are slim we would hear the difference on a YouTube video. Just saying.

Interesting video, to me the 2010 actually sounds "overly" bright in a couple of the modes in the clip, I would also like to know how cranked the output level was, and IMO they did use some pretty cranked presence settings too.

My 08/09 3ch to me sounds somewhere in between these as far as brightness/presence goes, but I don't crank the presence as much as they have in the video, otherwise it probably would compare more with the 2010 in the clips... And in turn possibly sound maybe too sharp/bright at high output levels.

Bit hard to judge with an online clip, but I would almost say that the PRS has maybe a bit of a scooped mids kinda tone too.

Cool video though with the settings diagrams and everything put in place, nice work.

These are some really good observations. The FX Loop was not engaged, so the Master control you see on the control diagrams is the actual volume level. We had 'em loud!

That PRS had a rosewood neck which is similar in tone to mahogany, but with, as you correctly heard, less mids. Rosewood has a nice attack to it though!

The 2009 does have a more raunchy/aggressive/tighter tone to it.

I found it odd that the 2009 was so muted in the highs. Every 3 channel I play is actually really aggressive, especially on channel 3. When I tried the 2010 in person, I didn't notice that the head was brighter. The clean tone was what honestly stood out to me the most.

It would be interesting if there was a video where someone tried to match tones between the two heads. I think that would be very revealing in a different way.

It's the awesome sound and features of the 2010 Recto that made me trade in my Soldano for one. I love it. Gain is smooth, rich, and these particular amps have the mids perfect to pop you out in a mix. That's what I liked about the Soldano, is it sounded so damn good in a band mix, but alas it had a shared eq and was basically featureless. This Recto I have now sounds awesome in a band mix, does not have shared eq, and has a boatload of features. Man I couldn't be happier.

I wonder how both cabs were miced up...
