About to buy an older Mesa 5:50

Here is a setting I use a lot now with humbuckers. Channel one crunch, gain-1, treble-9, mid-1, bass-1 contour-3 With the guitar full up and the contour off I get a great classic rock crunch. Then here's where the magic happens, roll back the guitar volume and kick on the contour to get a fat...

About to buy an older Mesa 5:50

$750 is great price, I see them more often around $850-$900 The 5:50 has been my primary amp for four years and the only amp I would consider as replacement is the PRS 2 channel H. Any 50w amp is not really a bedroom amp but that's where I practice, thank goodness I can practice in the morning...

    New 5:25+ owner

I have the 5:50 and with humbuckers I find the range of gain available does not require any pedals. The crunch setting can get pretty clean below 10 and above 1 is classic Mesa. I've heard the "blues for clean, crunch for lead" but I prefer the other way. I think channel one is fatter and...

    5:50 Contour Knob Question?

I don't believe the Contour ever adds mids. I think more clockwise will be more scooped mids and boosted bass/treble. For several years I only used the Contour at low bedroom volume. Now I've found a use I really like. I set channel one to crunch with gain at 1, treble 11, mid 1, bass 11...

5:50 Clean Channel Master Volume / Breakup ?

Hard to compare everyones expression of slight break up. But with gain 10 and master 11 this should be pretty loud and still clean, even with humbuckers. I do get some warm purr at gain levels above 3, but never anything I would describe as breakup.

    new 5/50 plus quesgtion...

Not a stupid question, but I have no idea the answer. Which makes me think it's not big deal. I've played tube amps almost daily for many years and for me tube replacement has been infrequent.

Pedal for Express 5:25 efx loop to act as a global volume?

I use the volume knob that comes free on all of my guitars.

Shorter than what? How long do tubes usually last for you?

Having a hard time bonding with my new Express 5:25+ combo

Every amp, 5w or 100w, has settings and environments where they sound great and settings that are not great. I have the 5:50 and have never thought of it as too bright, or even generally bright. But I'm sure I could find a guitar/pickup/room/volume setting that does not sound good with my amp...

    Cleans on the new plus

This change I don't understand, my 5:50 has great cleans and I don't recall any user complaints. I don't know what better clean is, but I tend towards the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy.

New Express 5:50 owner with a few questions.

I don't channel switch in songs so I haven't used the foot-switch in a long time. I plugged it in today and tried every combination with fine results. If there is some kind of gap I had to really want to hear it, which for me means nobody will hear or care. For tone controls I find the higher...

Express Plus 5:25 Bass Way Down Still Flabby

I have found the bass flabby on the 5:50 burn channel but I get a good setting with the bass below 9oclock.

contuor problems, anyone else experiance this?

I've owned the Express 5:50 for three years now. The contour is a boost of the treble/bass, so yes, it does boost the volume. If I had sliders instead of the contour, and I increased any frequency, I would be increasing the volume of that frequency.

    5:25 Demo or 5:25 Plus 1x12?

The Express 5:50 has been my main amp for four years. I would not pay $300+ more for the features added to the Plus models but I'm not a tweaker. The 5 band EQ and channel selectable wattage are for fine tuning but don't significantly change the amp. The solo boost is cool but I already have...

Fender amp to compliment an Express 5:50?

I have a 5:50 1x12 and I used to have a PRRI. I put them side by side with an A/B switcher and twiddled knobs on the 5:50 until I found the same sound as the PRRI. Then I sold the PRRI. I'm not sure what you mean by compliment? What I replaced the PRRI with is a Vox AC15C1, which has a sound...

New mesa Express 5 25 and 5 50 plus models

For me the changes are nice but I wouldn't pay anything to upgrade my 5:50 to the plus model. I do like the solo boost.

    NAD 5:50

Welcome! I've had my 5:50 for almost two years now, it is my main amp. I don't think I've seen any bad reviews or posts for the 5:50. I will say I find the majority of tones I like between 10-2 on the knobs, and there is a lot of variation in that range. Turning things to the extreme has not...

    Amp stands for your Express

I have always used a stand for combos for projection. With the amp on the floor and the player not too far in front of it most of the sound is going right past the knees. If you are playing a club with no stage the sound is also going to your audiences knees. With the stand everyone can hear...

    5:50 = Too much bass?

I have the 5:50 1x12 combo and I do find a bass difference between channel 1 & 2, 1 being very full bass, 2 never overly bass even turned all the way up. I have learned over the years the controls are made to be used and noon is not the baseline. Last night we had a new bass player who is much...

    5:50 1 X12 Resonance Issues

I had a problem with a different amp making weird noises at one frequency. It turned out to be a bad tube. I only mention this because maybe the sound you are hearing is not the cabinet. I have never had any problems with my 5:50 and I have used a lot on both a stand and the floor.
