Why do people leave unclipped strings while playing??

when I was young and broke, I kept the last set of strings I had on the guitar, in case I broke a string butting the new set on. (my guitar was cheap and crappy) Though I typically "wrapped" the strings into nifty litte loops, similar to how they come packaged. Once I learned that the source of my problem was burrs on the crappy tuners, I busted out a file, fixed the problem, and started cutting the floppy ends.

I got hit in the forehead during a performance at the Whiskey a GOGO my this guy who i teased all the time about not cutting his strings. The impact did cut my head open, but if he actually cut those strings, it would have ripped my forehead 4 or 5 inches!!
