I see a lot of the guys using variac for low gain and bluesy applcations as per the manual but I was cranking my amp las tnight in extreme mode with a V on the sliders with the gain at 3 O'Clock. I thought it had chuink but also had great solo sounds.

I'm old so metal to me is Maiden, Priest, Ozzy, Dio and Van Halen. Yes, when I was growing up Van Halen was metal!

Anyway I was on a quest for a great sound for Eruption and I had my Phase 90 going and was fooling around wiht the Variac Power switch and found that in high gain applications variac sounded great with both 45 watt and 90 watt settings in both Extreme and MArk IV modes.

What are your experiences with this?

I think the low end is loser with the variac on. I also use extreme mode. My current settings are 90 Watt, Full Power, Extreme, Pentode

For the VH brown sound I liked MarkIV, triode, variac, 45 watt. Great lead sound and the strings were easy to play.
