My band gigs nearly every weekend and plays a wide cross-section of material. So, when I first got my Road King, I wanted to find a flexible multi effects unit that would work well with the amp and the Ground Control/GCX midi system I was controlling it with. I tried the G major and found that it seemed to suck away volume and tone, especially from the higher gain channels. It also sounded a bit sterile to me. It was also hard to program, I thought. I got rid of it and bought two of the older Line 6 Studio modeler rack units. They sounded awesome, but again, sucked away so much volume as to make them unusable. Next came a Lexicon MPX G2. Sounded great, no volume drop, but was a bear to program and had some odd behaviors that made it unreliable. I finally settled on a Rocktron Xpression and have been having much luck with it. It is very transparent and the effects are good quality. It's easy to program, as well. The downside is the lack of a tuner and the noise suppression doesn't work very well. I still use my Korg rack tuner and my Rocktron Hush IIC, so that makes up for the Xpression's shortcomings.
