Sick of crappy sound might sell my dual recto

I use a clean boost (Radial PB-1) with my Roadster, and won't play without it. It allows me to keep the gain dialed back without losing sustain and harmonics. This makes the EQ section more responsive IMO, and keeps the amp tight.

VOODOO AMP MOD!!! I sent my Single Rectifier and had the STANDARD MOD done and it really tightened up my low end got rid of the flubbiness and warmed up my distortion with a smoother more sustaind tone. Great rythmn tone and a killer lead tone. Trace and the boys really delivered. :D

Tell us more about the Voodoo mod. I have read some of your post but is it that big of a difference? I have been playing a friends older DR and love the sound. Tight low end and sustain is o.k. I have thought about selling my single and getting an older DR but a mod might be cheaper.

I will put it this way. It made an amp that I felt was good sounding into an amp that is now incredible sounding. I look forward to playing it now. It even sounds great thru my 4x12 standard recto cab with vintage 30s. Before the MOD the amp just lacked the low end TIGHTNESS I love and get with my TRIAXIS. It's not going to make it a TRIAXIS by any means. But it will maintain the recto sound and just make it better. If you are considering the mod do yourself a favor and CALL TRACE at VOODOO AMPS!! Talk to him and tell him what you are after. He will listen and give you an honest opinion whether they can achieve the tone you are after. Hope this helps.

Thanks- That does help. I should talk to Trace and see what they can do.

Thanks again!

try this, switch to modern on back, this is for the red channel
bass 9 o'clock
mids around 8,9,10 o'clock try them
treb 1 o'clock
gain looks good
pre 12 looks ok to
bold
silicon

This sounds pretty good. I tried a holy grail today for a reverb on my mesa and sounds like garbage.

I dont have a tube screamer or od pedal infront of my roadster. I love my tone..and other people(who come to our shows) love my tone also. Adam Jones doesn't use a tube screamer. I think the tube screamer mentality comes from 80's. Nothing wrong in having one. But if you have a recto, get a nice cab ( I like genz benz) plug in your guitar (use a good cable). And then spend some time with it. Make sure you turn up the volume.

I am pretty sure you will come out with a great tone...rectos are great amps. Only thing you can get out of them is great tone, no bad tone >>> providing you spend time with it.

put your master output on 4 o'clock and you channel master at 7:30 this sounds the best it's the only way to run these amp's.. use the channel master to adjust your overall volume..

A tubescreamer can give you a nice compression and midrange that a lot of guys like. I think it is silly to leave it on all the time but they add nicely to 6l6 amps.

If it works for you that's great. It just seems that if you need such an extensive mod to an amp to be happy with it, you probably could have/should have just bought a different amp.

Recto's (tube amps in general but especially recto's) need volume. I was pulling my hair out with my RKII till I turned it up.

Based on your posts, sounds like you'll really like the EL34s. I like the Recto set on "Bold" setting. You're using the right cab with V30s.

My biggest complaint with the Recto is the fizzy-ness. A cheap Bad Monkey and experimenting with some preamp tubes will help fix that. (or a voodoo mod)

In the hopes of clarifying; I can honestly say that there is no amp on the market that sounds or feels exactly the same as the Deluxe Modified Rectifier. I'm not trying to sway your opinion but just offering some more info in the hopes that it will help. In the end it's all about what ever works for each individual player based on their playing style and specific needs.

Hope it helps

I have to say, I do love the way Voodoo amps mods Boogies the way Randall Smith started Mesa/Boogie by modifying Fenders. Just an observation.

If you have to Mod an amp then why not buy another amp that sounds like what you want in the first place ?

I paid too much for my Mesa's to have them altered. These amps are expensive enough. I think often people like a change because it is something different ( like going from el34 to 6l6 etc) but modding a Mesa seems like someone looking for some secret sonic magic that just does not exist.

This a good question and also a commonly asked question. Not o answer a question with a question but allow me to pose this question as food for thought.. What if there is not an amp that sounds like a Modified Rectifier?

I completely understand where you are coming and your opinion is certainly more than valid. Many players, myself included, have bought-n-sold a number of different guitars, pickups, cables, amps, cabinets, speakers, effects, etc in search for the tone that we want. Those who have taken the time to make a list of all the gear they own are often times surprised at the total amount of money spent on their quest for the grail-tone. By comparison a Modification may be looked at as a small price to pay for achieving the tones that players have been looking for.

I will be the first to say that Modifications are not for everyone and it would be misleading if I said they were. I can honestly say that there are a number of well known/pro players to players jammin' in their bedrooms that are enjoying the benefits and advantages that the Modifications have given them. We talk and work closely with players to better understand their individual needs, the kind of tones they are looking for, what their overall rig consists of, etc and this allows us to better serve as well as meet their needs. In short, a Modification will not create a great player, but it can inspire one.

Food for thought

Thank you for the kind and supportive words, all of us here at Voodoo Amps greatly appreciate it. I hope you have a great weekend and as always please feel free to call if you need anything what so ever.

Have a great day

I own a voodoo modified Marshall TSL, and I think it is worth it. I bought it directly from trace and it's my #1 amp with the Roadster being #2. I am just waiting to hear from trace that they will do a mod on the roadster to send it.
