Page 6 of the manual states "BRIT works very well with EL34 type power tubes so be sure to try using the Real Panel Bias switch and swapping the stock compliment of 6L6’s for a set of EL34’s to create the ultimate pre/power match in the studio. EL34’s will most likely compromise the performance of the other modes, making the entire amp brighter and thinner. You may want to keep using 6L6 type tubes for most of your live applications."

So, are they saying switching to EL34s are not good for the other channels? I know that can't be true, but I'd appreciate it if anyone can clarify.

That's what they're trying to say. Let your ears decide. Lots of Recto owners prefer EL34s over 6L6s though.

To me, EL34s are more aggressive sounding. Brighter, yes, but nothing that can't be dialed out by turning back the treble. They also have more upper end harmonics, a higher midrange, and less low end, although I've found JJ E34Ls to have nearly the same low end as a 6L6.

Another alternative is the JJ KT77. It's like a hybrid EL34/6L6. It acts like an EL34, but has the lower midrange of 6L6s.

Guess I'm the only one that prefers 6L6s in my Roadster. Brit with 6L6s sounds more like those old school vintage Marshalls ala KT66s...

I ONLY play my Roadster with EL-34s...tried to go back to 6L6s numerous times, but I HATE the amp with 6L6s.

I think it makes all the channels sound better!
