I was playing around with a new way of picking that got some cool new tones. By no means is this clip really ready to be posted here since the playing is not complete(very rough and have not even started on the cleans). I did want to share how it sounded. It may not mean anything to you but I thought I would share.

On the rhythm I brushed my thumb on my picking hand lightly against the strings as I played and got some enhanced harmonic overtones. It almost gives the illusion that I have more gain dialed in than I really do and really gives it some teeth as well. No boost was used on this clip.

What do you think?

BTW, the song is Monkey Business by Skid Row. I never played this song until 2 hours ago. I forgot how cool Slave To The Grind was. I threw a solo over the top of it as well.

Isn't that the normal way of playing harmonics? Other than open string harmonics that is.
You can even vary the tone of the harmonic by moving your picking hand to the left or right on the string.

yep, the link isn't correct... did you notice if the inclination of the pick when hitting the strings did change or not? I ask because I often play with the pick not parallel to the strings, but slightly inclinated and I can achieve a smoother tone and actually more gain (palm muting is really heavy and fat if played this way).

Nicely done, I liked the tone too...but it needs more cowbell :p. You just rejuvenated that cd back into my cd player.

I guess my picking style is between that method and ytse_jam's method. It's really cool to see how such things can effect tone.

Thanks for sharing.

Yep, doing so you partially attenuate the fundamental frequency and let upper harmonics shine. Then, hitting the strings in a softer way (beacuse of the thumb) reduces the attack and cause that feeling of more gain.
