Welcome to the forum .....

That is about what I payed for mine.

What do you people know about this .....

I should have been more specific. Mine is a Microcab II, and it really was in NOS condition, so I did not mind paying $200.00 for it. I already had regular Microcab that was really beat up. I still managed to sell it on ebay for $75.00. Of course, the Ampulator is the king of all the microcabs, but they are hard to find and expensive.

Spice is great software. When I was taking electrical engineering courses, it was the software we used to test circuits before building them in the lab.

I use 5spice all the time when I'm modifying my amps. I use it mostly to understand the frequency response of changes that I'm making to various parts of the circuitry. You gotta get a model for a 12AX7, though, for it to be really helpful. I found one somewhere, but I don't remember where. It should be able to import any SPICE model for a 12AX7.

I have fallen in love with my recto recording pre - I was skeptical and never thought I'd say it.

I've heard that the amp sims can do a great deal for the tone. What is you guys' experience? Right now I go straight out of the Recto recording pre into the line in on my RME Fireface 800. Sounds great. What do you recommend to make it sound better?

Hey guys, do you know if the direct out jack on the mark 3 is after the power section or before? If it's after then all I need is an interface and IR to get it to sound decent, right? But wouldn't the signal be really really powerful?

That's the nature of direct outs - they make them so that you can go direct in to somewhere that needs a signal. If the direct out were 'powered' then that would defeat the purpose of the direct out, as no sound card, amplifier, etc. is built for powered input. If its powered, it really needs some kind of load (like a speaker). Basically, if that were the case, the direct out would really just be another speaker out. So no, your mark III direct out comes out at line level, prior to any power amp amplification.

So, again - any recommendations on speaker sims? Do they really make a big difference? And if so, which ones are the best or best bang for the buck?

Ok, thanks for the clarification, that's what I suspected too.
So how come someone mentioned that the "slave out" is after the OT and can be used for direct recording?

In my experience from going from preamp to a pc recording interface, the biggest challenge you're facing isn't the lack of speaker cabinets but rather a lack of power amplification. My peavey rockmaster's direct signal sounds like a dry, fizzy, bee hive, but when I plug it through a tube amp's fx return all of a sudden it's punchy and warm, and not fizzy anymore.

I tried to find a good power amp sim that can add that magical filtering and power tube saturation to the preamp signal, but nothing even came close to what a real power amp does. The most promising thing I heard was Nebula 3, which supposedly is an impulse response plugin that changes the response dynamically based on a host of factors, but I didn't check that out as it costs money.

Simply using a cab impulse will help a lot, but I don't think it will get you a real tube sound.
However for brokeass musicians like me it'll have to suffice. I recommend guitarhack's IR collection, and Noirin's Diezel IR, I think you can google to find those.
There are probably other good ones out there, these are just the ones I happen to know about.
