Today I went to the store to fit a Mesa SPAX7 preamp valve in V1 of my Roadster head. Boy does it sound quiet and the attack is more immediate now...

Definitely recommend them if you need a quieter amp and a more responsive attack. For those who love sag, you might not like them though. On the other hand, there's that spongy mode and tube rectification option... 8)

I've been wondering about them but I don't think they will fit in my recto's V1 slot because of the metal guard around it. I've seen some mixed reviews but I'd like to try one.

The one I fitted in my Roadster, even with the metal guard one, fits fine. I don't think you should have any problems, as it's the same size as any 12AX7...

To me the SPAX7 I tried in V1 of my Roadster was a big dissapointment. Sure its quiet, but the one I tried was lifeless and sterile sounding. I flipped mine on E-bay.

I guess everyones mileage will vary.

I had had to cut some of the (heat shrink?) tubing off of mine to make it fit inside the metal shield. A GT I had was way too bright and the sp didn't. it (sp) sounds good to me. nothing spectacular, but good.

I guess something spectacular would be NOS...
