Mark V or Roadster???

I'd say Mark V for tight metal riffing , smooth liquid lead and very usable crunch channel
Roadster for spongy tone , aggressive but not tight and not as smooth on lead playing
So, if you're a lead player, get the mark V and if you're a rhythm player who doesn't need tight chugga-chugga tone, get a roadster.

I guess the best thing would be a used Mark IV and used Single or Dual recto for the price of either a new mark V or a new roadster.
That's for the Mesa family but
In my opinion, I prefer a Peavey 6505+ for metal playing and a Splawn Quickrod for rock and the rest.. both used for the same price as the mark IV and a DR.
I have a Splawn Nitro w/KT88 and it's fucking awesome for low-mid tight metal. Check those on youtube too

I have some really sweet mods that tighten up Rectos like you would not believe!
I can get great lead tones out of my Tremoverb and souped up Heartbreaker.
They are still not Soldanos, but sound great to me!

So you had to throw out a Playboy and expect me not to look at it.. So what sort of REC mods are you talking about. Any sound clips?

I vote Mark V. Ive only played it at music stores but ive owned a Tverb, 3 different rectos, and Mark IV and currently have a MArk III. Ive also spent a little time with roadsters - in stores only. But I feel versatilty goes to the mark along with lead tone and brOOtz. The marks have tons of gain on tap. I you need more, they boost well. Youd have to boost the roadster for brOOtz anyway (not trying to start a shitstorm argument). They also have the ability to somewhat move the mid voicing around with the GEQ.

Boosting a Roadster because you can't play br00tz metal on those without them is an overrated statement anyway...

Man I wish I lived in a city where I could just go and try everything out for myself!
Looks like I'm ditching work on Tuesday and driving to Tucson!!!!!!!

Did you get anything yet? Play hookey and hit the big city?

I tried the Mark V and a Roadster. I didn't get to spend much time with the Roadster though.

I decided to keep my Heartbreaker and revert it back to the souped up JCM-800 mod instead of the SLO mod that was in there. I am pretty freaking happy right now. I just can't seem to master the Swiss Army amps like other guys here. I get bored or just plain pissed off if I can't get the tones I'm looking for in a few hours.

I know what most guys will say, "Well you gotta know how to work a Boogie." I do, and I didn't like them.

:D Pretty fucking pleased with my Heartbreaker again though!!!!!!!! :D

I had a similar experience trying to get a 3 channel amp to capture the Mark IIC+ mojo. I ended up with the Xotic RC Booster pedal and turning down the Lead Drive on my C+. Sometimes you have to go with what you know. 8)

I think that's the conclusion I keep coming to. I just need to have a more simplistic approach to everything and spend more time playing! Too many knobs and switches just means that I spend too much time playing with them!

I can play metal on anything - even with my limited tallent. I feel the best way to get tight crunchy bottom and metal tone out of a recto is with a boost. If others can do it with out - awesome. This debate has been beat into the ground. Dont see how my opinion is overrated. Its just my $.02

If it works for you, great. But there are definitely ways to get it fairly tight as well...

I really liked the Roadster I played, and it can get you that modern punk tone, or less crazy metal, but Im wondering if a Mark V head would be better?

I unloaded my Roadster after picking up my Mark V. The Roadster is a great amp, but the Mark V is a better match for my style and taste. The Mark V definitely has more to offer tonally, but it doesn't quite nail the Recto sound like the Roadster does. Having said that, the V can come closer to sounding like a Roadster than the Roadster can come to sounding like a Mark amp...
