Okay, here it is: no Mark has a better crunch tone than the III.

I have to agree. I can spend all day on R2. Sounds great with a Les Paul and a 4x12. I recently bought a couple Mark lll’s. I sent the first one to Mesa for the lll+ mod which included the R2 mod. I talked to Mike B. today about modding the second one. I also just picked up a Dual Rec. Diming the gain on the clean channel is also a really nice crunch tone.

Couldn't agree more, I love R2 on my Blue Stripe MKIII combo...

R2 is Captain Crunch! The only Boogie tone I like more is the Lead mode on my Studio Preamp which has more high end content that compliments palm muting and variations in picking attack.

MkIII R2 with a mild boost is a legit tone. BUT, I will fight you, "No MESA has a better crunch tone than a Mark IIB".
