try using a graphic EQ in front of the amp. I had one of the first Mark III heads with no graphic EQ and it had a similar "farty" sound, just muddy with no focus. Then i played through my friends Mark III (a later one with a graphic EQ, purple dot ? idunno) and it was 100 times better sounding. I know the amp is supposed to sound good without the graphic EQ but I just couldn't get used to it. Try using a graphic EQ pedal or rack unit in front of it and experiment to see if the sound improves any. cheers
