my vote is without no doubts for eh gold, svetlana 12ax7 and jj ecc83s.

Fatboy135, do you mean the SED 12AX7's, or the "new" Svetlana's?

Platypus,
I think alot of the "darkness" issues people made refferance to was more about the JJ power tubes. I just talked with Sgt. Thump who absolutly loved the KT77's in his Stiletto when he first put them in. Now he's told me there 'too dark" sounding and swapped back in the stock EL34's. I know the issue here is about the D.R. but, I have read alot of "blanket syndrom" bitches about the JJ's in the power section with alot of amps.
Glad you found a preamp tube that works for you and I'll have to send in my $7 bucks and (and 2 box tops from any Kellogs cereal) and pick one up.

I've heard the same about JJ's power tubes as well. In fact the first time I recall hearing about JJ's "preamp" tubes being dark was on this thread.

"c" of course ;) untill one year ago the "c" were svetlana, nowadays svetlana is sovtek :(
I never hear that dark blanket curtain on a jj, in my point of view jj are great, the costs only 7 dollars and sounds great.
I tested the ecc803s and the ecc83s, the ecc803s was more hifi for people who loves supertramp :D the ecc83s was rude, punchy with a great overdrive overtones and great for rock they pumps my TA into a rocker status

I need to retube my tripple rectifier. I want to try out the JJ ecc83s tubes.
Im using mesa tubes now and I have a few extra ones left (6l6GC - STR420)
Would you mix them with the jj´s or would that just couse even darker sound?

please say you´re opinions. I need to retube the whole thing

Hey guys, new here...I post over at Rig-Talk.com (fairly new forum with manufacturer sections and such) and was a sometime regular at Harmony Central for a while. Talking to those guys didn't get me anywhere...too many JJ haters. :? So who better to ask than some fellow Boogie owners?

I'm looking at getting a full high-gain JJ retube to my Dual Rec, with 6L6s and the GZ34's as well. For those of you hearing the "dark blanket" effect with their ECC83S, are you running the GZ34 rectifier tubes with them? It seems like the people I've talked to who hate JJ's preamp tubes aren't doing anything with those, sometimes even leaving their 6L6s as is.

Also, for fatboy135: Do you think running strictly JJs in the preamp section will increase the risk of overly darkening the tone? You seem like a pretty big fan, but I noticed you dig the EH and Winged C's too, so I figured I'd ask what you thought. It would also help me decide whether I want a couple of EHs to play with. 8)

I never noticed such dark blanket or hell´s effects.
I have on my little tube stock the ecc83s and the ecc803 for my taste the ecc83 are more rude and I like them so much I achieve the beinst crunch tone with that tubes.
I think that retubing all the amp with jj could cause the dark blanket effect, on my point of view you couldn´t retube all the amp because some tubes and some brands becomes good in some positions and becomes awful on another positions. even there isn´t any cook recipe to know where you could place a tube and it will works so fine.
I spend nearly 300 euros and buy all 12ax7 on the actually market, then I test them one on one on my triaxis setup until I achieve my sound I spend one month along and play and do many hours of tests.
The tubes that don´t likes to me were sold to recover my poor economy.
My conclusions was that eh, "c" and jj works so fine on my triaxis.
