When I get some spare cash I'll def order a bunch of each and just sit around for a day to test.
So I have just waist 300 dollars on preamp tubes
I buy 15 different brands of tubes to test them, after the 4 hours test I decided which tubes I likes and which dislikes.
The disliked tubes are being sell on secon hand market, hoping to recover a bit of money

Heres the fortunate bit Platypus. The tube is $7. Buy one, try it in v1. If you like what it's doing to your sound, buy some more. If you don't, its only $7 lost. People spend that much on coffee in two days.

It´s true, maybe a bit more than 7 because you need to pay the shipment but 7$ is less than the typical 10$ you find walking down the street ;)
Remember if you dislike in V1 it doesn´t means that in other position it will sound bad too. You must to do some other test in other sockets

So what tubes did you decide on?

I think it's the higher gain-rated preamp tubes that contribute to the blanket effect because I just did a full retube in my LSS with the "normal" ECC 83 S's (5 of those, 1 balanced as a phase inverter, and 4 EL 84's) and I've had no blanket effect yet - quite the opposite. Check out my descriptive post in the modern amp board. :)

Well I bought one JJ ECC83S high gain with high transconductance, it should be here tomorrow.

I will try it in V1 and report results.

remember sir platypus that a fail test into your first socket didn´t implies that the tube is not good, so just try on another sockets and discover the differences that a tube can do into the differents sockets

Will do :)

Well I got it today in the post, will update tomorrow when I get a chance to ab(use) it :)

Ok so I installed it in V1

Initial impressions:

1) 3rd channel lost all the harshness I hated about it
2) All 3 channels became more 'musical' tone wise, lots of intricate overtones
3) Smooth lush distortion

It really isn't THAT much different than the mesa one, to be honest it was hard to tell but the more I played with it the more I started noticing that I was glad it wasn't a drastic change in tone, more like it just improved some weak points in my mind about the amp.

Overall I'm glad I did it, I think I'll leave it in V1 for a while.

swap into another sockets, only to test it

I might, I'm really happy with the tone right now so maybe one day when I get frustrated with it I'll move it about ;)

ok it was only an idea

I know, thanks for the suggestion, I didn't mean to sound like I wrote it off :)

I'm gonna start experimenting with other tubes soon anyway, just had to get this JJ issue off my mind since so many people complain about this specific tube, I wanted to try it first hand.
