Hello, Gents!
I was tinkering around with my prototyper and built the Silicon, Bold, Modern, Red preamp from the Rev F schematic just to see how close I could get without Mesa's trannies, etc. and compare it to my Rev F. It got quite close and sounds great, but I just love to mess with it, so I tried adding a capacitor in parallel to one particular resistor in the circuit and MAN did it bring out the grunt and presence!
First off, I built my prototyper with two gain controls, simply because you can get a lot more tonal variations than with a single gain control plus fixed resistor network down the line.
As far as changes, all I did was install a .01uf/630V Mallory 150M film cap across R242 which created your basic treble-peaking circuit, but with a much larger capacitor value. That difference really brought out a solid midrange crunch with a bit of chime to it.
If you're looking to beef up your tone, that is definitely one way to do it.
