I have recently decided that I need to get rid of my LSS for an amp that is running 6L6's. The character of the EL84's just don't suite me.

I want an amp that has more than 2 channels. I was at my local GC the other day and played an Egnator Tourmaster. It sounded so good I immediatley went home and got my guitar to try it also. With the exception of my bandmaster, my guitar never sounded better.

So I went and played a friends LSC, same thing. I defenitley need 6L6's.

So any way I was researching the Egnator just out of curiosity, and found a lot of good things on Harmony Central, however there are just enough bad service and reliability stories to make me gun shy. The reliability stories aren't too bad, the service stories are herendous.

So any way, my question is this...

Should I go with a Mark V which will involve more cash, or it sounds like I may have an oppertunity to pick up a Mark IV with little cash outlay in a swap deal with my LSS.

I can't play either of these amps but I trust you guys, and it being Mesa I know the tone will be there.

I like a real clear clean channel, and then I like to set my gear so that it just gets more driven with each step of the pedal, from mild blues drive, to strong sustaining lead.

What to do?

I understand the EL84 issue very well. Its for some but not for others. But it is really hard to advise you-->you should try and play

The only hints to be given is

have a look to this

http://mesaboogie.com/news/2010/12/video-john-petrucci-mark-v-settings-and-tone-tips/

The cleans (with V30's) are in the first video and look to here too

As Mark V can play both 6L6 and EL84's(there is also a Video there) you can compare

My road was

30 years mostly Fender some Marshall#s

TA15-->Mark1 (kind of)mode-->Petrucci Video-->Play Mark V-->buy

The MKV CAN NOT use EL84's. It will take either 6L6GC or EL34.

Thanks Dom I knew what he meant. Thanks to both for chiming in. I truly can not make up my mind on this.

You have any sound clips of yours through any of the amps?

Hi

Yes I play a Comanche-->in my case Mahagonnay/Ebony fretboard
And sorry I am not in recording-->may try sometimes

All I can say is following-->Before Mark V I changed the bridge pickup to Will Ray one-->was soso a bit different, but no big change-->kind of MEH.Up to the arrival of the Mark V.From then the guitar but especially the Will Ray started to life. One of my favorites now

Yea but you don't know what the standard bridge would be like throught the V.

What part of the world are you in?

Go with the Mark IV. :D

Are you saying that from the stand point of the deal or are you basing that on some characteristics of the amps themselves?

I would say get the Mark V, I've had one for a year and god it's just the best dam amp I've ever had.

Yea the Haggerty videos are one of the things that convinced me I need to get out of my LSS.

OFF TOPIC

No I dont know what Standard bridge pickup woud have sounded.I like my Comanche a lot,is my closest take to a Les Paul(which I could never bond with(ergonomics)/therefore the mahagonnay) but the Z-pickups from voicing sound pretty close each other regardless the position(which should be as all of them are the same output) this changes with Will Ray which adds annother voice and it changes very noticeable with the Mark V.The Mark V seem to like this pickup better then my HRD dlx,the Vibro Champ or even the TA-15 does(Same also on Axe-Fx)

Owning 7 guitars, playing (if I can) every day the Comanche-amp pair moved from 5 % playing with the Mark V to 30 % playing.

I life in Austria/Europe/ near Vienna

Annother reason for (just) me to take Mark V is that it can be played at bedroom + levels. This an Mark IV can hardly* do

Roland

*Only using the record out -->Monitor but this is not same thing

I find this interesting, the pickups in my guitar all sound completley different, which is why I bought it. Are you sure you don't have your second switch in the wrong position, that could explain that. If not I don't know what to tell ya. They should sound completely different.

far away from Mark V

On my Comanche, maybe because of the wood, it is like this.Dont get me wrong of course there is a difference(toggle in right position)shifting neck-middle- bridge and back but at my ASAT and my CS Strat difference is way bigger.

This by itself is nothing bad-I like it the way it is-just usually try to have guitars with a wider tonal scope(all my HB's are coil split).
