i am buying new tubes now

so yea....im pretty sure i definitely need new power amp tubes now
even if i have the gain CRANKED on vintage OR modern in my 3ch TR, there still isnt nearly what i was expecting (my line6 hd147 had more)
it blew a fuse a few weeks ago, which ppl have told means that a power tube is most likely on its way out.
ive watched the tubes and i havent seen any of the things that ppl have told me i would...so i figure ill just replace all 6.

this is where you come in: I'm a TOTAL tube noob. I play metal, i love to play fast. Tones i envy are metallica, dream theatre, lamb of god and such (lots of gain, lots of tightness, lots of low end).

Do I want 6L6's still, or EL34's? If you would also include tube recommendations, id greatly appreciate it.

Do you have an amp tech near you? It might be worth your time and money to have them look at it if you don't have spare tubes sitting around.

I love JJ E34L's in my DR, they really add a different tonality to it, and (IMO) bring it to life (I play everything from pop and jazz to hardcore metal/screamo in different bands). I order full retube kits from eurotubes.com, Bob and the whole crew there are very helpful and friendly (and they're only a short drive from me). A lot of people speak highly of dougstubes.com around here as well, but I don't have any first hand experience with him.

Yes they can, you just have to get them from a reliable source. Like rabies said, Bob at eurotubes.com (or any of them there) can help you out. They have an online order section that you can just go to mesa retube kits and order them right there and they take care of everything.

Groove Tube EL 34 LS's are nice and fairly easy to come by. Most music stores carry them. They are a little more powerful El34 w/ a more pronounced bottom end according to the web site and in my experience. I've found with JJ's to make sure you have a JJECC83 in the phase inverter. Really seemed to smooth things out for me.

My first boogie, an ROV, was had JJ's in the power section and the ECC83 in the input stage and it was a little harsh and gravely. Moving it to the PI seemed to do the trick.
