just wondering...

i saw an ad for a 50w JCM 900 SL-X locally for $600 and got tempted...

but don't think i can justify it since i already have a Stiletto Deuce.

but how do you think the SLX would compare or not with the Stiletto?

I'd say the stiletto tears it apart. I much prefer it to any marshall I've ever played.

On a side note, Marshall enthusiests tend to call the JCM 900 as the weaker model of the entire series.

The SLX's are the best JCM900 out there, they are all tube and not bad. If you could get him down to anything under $500 I would say it is worth the buy.

but aren't the SL-X models based on a hot rodded 800? just giving it an extra preamp gain stage?

i've always heard the SL-X's sound different than your standard 900

I wouldnt say a hot rodded 800, but defintly a pure tube Marshall amp that sounds good compared to the rest of the 900 series.

It is basicaly a one channel amp with a boost function (2nd channel)

I had a 100 watt SLX and it was **** cool! It had the most gain of any Marshall I had ever owned, and I had 7 different JCM800s, but it had a different "flavored" tone than the 800s. If you've already got a Stiletto I see no reason to get the SLX unless it's such a great deal you just can't pass it up.

The slx's are definitly sweet amps, but stick with the mesa.
there is nothing the marshall can do that the stiletto can't do better.

I just demoed an older SLX900 and it does sound pretty good, but it it is still a little more compressed even with the gain lowered than say a 800 with a booster. The Stilletto still sounds more focused and is more versatile IMO

I've played Marshalls since the 1980. I've had two 1971 100watt JMP Lead amps that was modded by Paul Rivera and quite a few JCM800s. Some modded, some not modded. All of them lacked bottom end. I hated Boogies back then. They sounded like a blanket was over the speaker cabs. Then a friend of mine last year had a Stiletto Trident (I). I checked out the Stiletto at Boston Guitar Works. I now have a Stiletto Deuce (I) and a Lone Star Classic. Stiletto gets the best Marshall sound I've ever had. Only better sounding amp is the Bogner XTC. I'd stick with the Stiletto. It gets the Marshall sound with more bottom.

How does the Stiletto Ace compare sound wise with the new Marshall JVM410C ? The JVM is about $700 more than a 1 x 12 Stiletto Ace. The reviews I've read built up both amps but I'm wondering if anyone has a first hand non biased opinion. The dealer I deal with is about an hour away and they have the Stiletto Ace in and I have tried it but they don't have a JVM in stock that I can try out.

To compare apples to apples, you'd have to compare the Ace head to the JVM head. In such a contest, the Ace would smash the new JVM. I've done the A/B with both, and the Ace is mo' better.

As far as JVM combo vs. Ace combo, I haven't compared, but I'm pretty sure I would prefer the Ace combo.
