I posted this in the vintage amp forum but this might be the better spot and I apologize for the double posts.

I just saw a great deal on an older Boogie cabinet loaded with EVM12Ls and Black Shadows. I've been kind of targeting one with V30s as I generally like their sound, but this deal may be too good to pass up. I wanted to see if anyone has any experience with this combination of speakers or even the speakers themselves and what your thoughts are.

Rig wise I have a Triaxis with a 50/50 power amp. I play mostly metal (old/new, etc.) but do like other genres of rock/country rock/blues, etc. as well. My main concern though is always my high gain tone.

Thanks in advance!
Jeff

Is this a 4x12? I have 2 of the old vertical 2x12 half backs that originally came with C90s (Black Shadow label) in the top, open, with EV12Ls in the bottom Thiele section. That was what Neil Schon was using at the time in the 80s and it does sound pretty big and powerful. But I replaced the EVs with C90s and love 'em. Balance, crunch, but not too brittle.

The cab is the important part of the equation. I'd get it, sell whatever speakers I didn't like (the market is very good for the EV12Ls) and buy what you like. Guaranteed, the cab sounds good!

Good luck!

kdorsey nailed it in one. I had one with C90s over EVs, loved it, but if you end up swapping out any or all of the speakers, it's a great cab design, and like he said, EVs are at a premium these days.

Thanks guys. It's a 4X12. I e-mailed the guy to see if it was a half back or not and haven't heard back. I'm very comfortable with soldering and wiring (mostly pick ups), how hard is it to swap out speakers? The combination of C90s and V30s like in a Road Kind cab might be cool as well. And the price is really good.

Easy, easy, easy. Like changing a tire. And even for the stuff that takes some thinking/deciding (polarity, series/parallel), the web is full of diagrams, or we can walk you through it here.

Seriously, it's easier than pickups.

+1. Waaay easier. Just place a small piece of cardboard or tin foil over the speaker cone (or under the connectors).
