As the title says has anyone compared these 2 cabs. As the speakers are the same I am curious if there is a noticeable tonal difference thru the cab construction. I have a rockerverb on order which I intended to use alongside my roadster with a recto cab (when I eventually found one).

I was offered a great deal on the matching orange cab which was too good to refuse so now I'm thinking should I bother with the recto at all although it would be great to bounce between the 2 with an A/B switch.

These cabs are very expensive here though so I'm thinking is it worth it?

I have both the Orange PPC412 and the Mesa Rectifier Standard cab.

The Orange cab is a good sounding cab, but I didn't like it with my Triple Rectifier at all.

The Rectifier Standard cab however is a perfect match for a Recto, and it sounds killer with other amps as well. Smooth with tons of low end! The V30's on the Mesa cab are a bit different from the "normal" V30's, since they are made to Mesa's specifications.

The Recto cab sounds a lot more neutral in my opinion, while the Orange cab had this upper mid peak that didn't really sound good with a Recto.

The PPC412 is a quality cab, and it sounds good with certain amps (it sounded great with a Peavey 6505) but I personally prefer the smoother, dominating, more neutral sound of the Recto cab.

But of course this is only my opinion!

thanks, I didn't know that, that would explain why some prefer one to the other, I assumed the only tonal difference would come from the cab construction

Yep, it's pretty much a combination of both the speakers and the construction.

The Mesa cab is a lot bigger, thus it has more low end and smoother high's whereas the Orange cab is smaller in size, tighter sounding but with more high's and upper mids.

It's just a matter of personal preferences in the end. Some people like chocolate and some people like monkey testicles. :D

Please note that new Mesa V30's are the same as any other. It is the older Mesa V30's that are rated at 70watts as opposed to the 60watts that all other V30's are. I'm not sure though if the new 60w speakers are made in England like the older speakers were.

The Newer 60 watt mesa celestion are just normal V30's and yes they are made in england. The older 70 watt V30's where also made in england and they had more of a relaxed mid and lower bottem end.

Once the music scene switched from nu-metal to more of a harder punk rock/rock music scene mesa saw that people were using other cabs with there heads because they wanted normal V30's. However Mesa will deny that the 70 watt celestions were any different, even though they were.

A little over a year ago I was told that Celestion moved production of their V30s (and others) to China, yet the Mesa versions were still made in the UK. Whatever difference that makes is not clear to me other than maybe some lead in the children's toys here and there.

Did you order the Rockerverb 50 or 100?

50w + 4x12, both in black tolex, Should be here in a couple of weeks :D love orange amps but could never get past the colour. lol.

The black tolex looks sweet man, a music store in Greensboro, NC has i believe the 100 watt version (possibly the 50, not sure) of that head in black tolex. When they got it in, it was the only one on the east coast in black haha. It was accidentally shipped with the 2 black tolex 4x12's my bandmate had ordered.

any reason why you bought the 50 instead of the 100?

I like the voicing of the 6V6 based 50 watter, the 100 ships with EL34's but you can change them, plus Orange had a black 50 watter in stock, non stock colours are a minimum 6 week wait.

Hope you guys did the decent thing and fully tested it before sending it back

haha, yeah, well, the place ended up keeping it, and it's sitting over there for sale now.

I remember how suprized people were when they saw my black PPC412 for the first time, since they didn't even know they existed.

I got mine over a year ago, and there was hardly any of 'em around at that time, mainly because people didn't know that the black ones even existed.

Does your cab have the vintage 30's? My other guitarist's black tolexed Orange cabs are loaded with Celestion V30's and they sound AWESOME.

I like the Orange 412s a lot, they sound great!

I'm picking up a Tiny Terror from my local dealer on wendsday. Incidentally, they're a Mesa dealer as well. If you'd like me to A/B them and report on it, I most certainly could. :)

Personally though I trust Mesa's build quality a little more than Orange, but come on, and entirely ORANGE tolex'd cab...that's just effing RIGHTEOUS, dude!

yeah an 2nd opinion A/B would be great, actually I'm now swinging towards a mesa 2 x 12 just for the fact I won't want to be chucking 50kg of orange cab around too often.

like the prs btw, Im hoping to do a deal on a custom 22 or 24 this week, fingers crossed.
