so I run my dual with a recto 2 x12 . I bought the 2 x12 instead of the 4 x 12 as my place is on top of a huge , skinny stair case and luging the 4 x12 by myslef just wasnt going to work . I have 2 xv30's from my old amp thats fried that I always intened to add as a 2nd 2 x 12 when I could be bothered. now I'm ready as i'll be gigging ealry next year .

I have a mate who's a fabricator/carpenter and he's gonna build it for me but 1st I need to decide what design will work best .

Not sure If I should go another closed back or get him to build an open back design to accentuate the sound of the recto cab .

Anyone run double 2 x 12's ? any recomendations to what will work ?

this may start a **** storm for the guys who use stacks but ill say it anyway, unless your on the stadium circuit with your band, you dont need more than 2 drivers in your cab, especially if they are vintage 30s!!!!

check out the 2x12 XF cab - http://www.billfitzmaurice.com/XFCabs.html

I built myself one and have been loving it to death!!! You get open and closed back, and you also get a much fuller sounding cab that can fill an entire venue. imho, with this cab you dont need 4 speakers lol, you might find yourself not needing the recto 2x12 and you could make some cash. otherwise id recommend using the xf on top of the recto cab for a stronger ear level dispersal. price of wood glue hardware etc was about 300aud and i got 2 v30s from ebay for $200 plus about a weeks works (2 or 3 hours a day) and youve got yourself an amazing cabinet. i have played it against a few other brand cabinets (mesa, orange, blackstar and vox) and none of them fill a room like the XF212. considering some of these cabs are made with high quality birch or maple and mine is made out of cheap 5-ply plywood this says a lot!! tonewise i cant say it sounded different to any of the other cabs with vintage 30's in it

i would send you the word document with the schematics in but he deserves the $15 he charges for them because it really is a well designed cabinet and when you build it you realize how much of a ripoff some cabinets are and how poorly they can be made

edit - heres a pic :)

Thanks I'll check it out . I've also found a website of a guy in wagga who custom makes cabs. Gonna see what his prices are like with delivery to sydney .

sound wise the extra cab isnt needed but it is fun to move more air around you . I'd love to actaully get long speaker cables and run them side by side with me in the middle .try to crush myslef with tone

Custom builds are FUN! I have a copy of a mills mach212B that I really like. I loaded it with a c90 and a v30. It has the same sort of girth, openness, and phatness you typically find in a 4 x 12. The only thing really missing is the added beef of two extra speakers.

The thiele 2 x 12 design is great but different. I really like the cleans with this configuration and the gain sounds great too. You just don't get the same thump as with a close back though. The plus side is you trade whump for tightness. Both worth a look.

Here is the build project for the two cabs!

I was thinking about adding a vertical Mesa 2x12 to my horizontal Mesa 2x12 (vertical ontop of the horizontal). I'm quite curious about what that combination would sound like together (the tightness of the horiz and the projection of the verti). I bet it would be amazing... :)

Oh, I reverse engineered the Mach212B. I took the exterior dimensions from the website and I worked backwards. The biggest difference in the design is that my cab has interior wood bracing in it while the original uses steel L channels (brackets) epoxied in place to hold the unit together. My design also has two panels on the back so it can run as a 3/4 back as well as a close back. I'd imagine mine is even heavier than the original, but it sounds absolutely huge!
