    Mark V with Axe-FX

Even switching modes such as crunch/mark 1 in the same channel has a significant effect on the power amp section (I'm using it with a Mako Mak4 preamp). Definitely try it out in all modes and channels also when running a preamp into the effects return. Makes a big difference.

    Loving my MkV

I replaced the C90 in my closed-back widebody cab with a Scumback M75 (100w) and I prefer it by far. That together with JJ 6CA7 power tubes, and after extensive tweaking, I can finally get the juicy, chewy high gain sounds I was looking for!! Mids maxed, with presence set low, around 9 'oclock...

    Mark V dislike

As I said above, it lets me run the master much higher (not using the loop) which really fills out the low end in CH3. The Aracom is very transparent. I don't notice any loss of tone or dynamics in step attenuation mode.

You know, I was getting ready to put it up for sale but just for fun decided to try it out with the Aracom and it surprisingly opened up new possibilities so I am not ready to do that just yet. I did exaggerate a bit in my initial post to make a point. In fact I have no issues with the clean...

WTF man, I am not the only one who's had this problem. Do you have a head or combo..or perhaps tiny little girly hands? And BTW, CH2 sounds nothing like a Marshall IMO. There's little resemblance. I have a '68 plexi here and several other Marshalls to compare with.

Well, I finally got it working again. Not sure what the issue was. I reseated the tubes and installed a new fuse. I didn't put the v1 shield back in as it's just impossible to do so without taking the amp out of the head box ( :( ). Anyway, I recently got an Aracom DAG (attenuator) and that made...

Wise words. To add to the fun factor the amp died on me when I started it up after this little exercise. No pilot light even. So now I get to debug it, too.

    Thanks - so do I.

    Mark V dislike

The longer I have this amp the more I dislike it. Endless tweaking without ever truly getting there. Even my old Marshall JMP-1 + EL34 50/50 destroys it in the high gain department. Today I tried to replace the V1 preamp tube but because of it's idiotic placement and large shield I managed to...

    My New Mark V

If you can't find a useful tone after dialing it for a few days it's not the right amp for you. It shouldn't be that hard.

First day with my new Mark V!

I would avoid running any digital stuff in the loop unless the ADDA is bypassed for the dry signal (or you have a high end unit). I mean, who wants cheap digital conversion in the main audio path? Might as well by a modeler then.

Mark V Preset Knobs... Anyone use them?

If combined with make-up gain you can boost a passive eq from a user perspective (cut everything but the desired freq, then add gain). But like I said, I only know enough to be dangerous...:D The slider EQ just sounds so much bigger to me. I'll try your suggestion though - thanks.

Mark V Preset Knobs... Anyone use them?

Yeah the preset EQ sounds really awful. I don't know if it's the actual EQ curve as much as the actual circuit. I looked briefly at the schematic (understanding just enough to be dangerous...) and the slider EQ is a passive, inductor-based one whereas the preset EQ looks like some kind of solid...

    "Mark Vb" wishlist

Wow, man. Eliminate crunch, edge and the GEQ? That would kill the amp for me. I couldn't stand edge mode with the stock 6L6s (or Mark 1 mode for that matter) but once I switched to EL34s I'm getting some great low gain, edge-of-breakup, sounds out of it.

    "Mark Vb" wishlist

I've had a Mark V for a couple of months and it's a truly fantastic amp. However, there's still room for improvement: 1) Fix the preset EQ. I find it a useless tone suck; thin and scratchy. 2) Revoice CH 3 Mark IIc+ and Mark IV modes to have a bit more low end punch. They sound good but lack...
