Need help Dating and Valueing NOS (or maybe just old) tubes

Depending on your taste, the GE 5751 can be a great first preamp tube (V1). It has about 70% of the gain and less noise than a 12ax7. It may let you turn your amp up a bit and get a better output grind. Worth a try in any case. Can also smooth out a reverb. It is safe to swap with a 12ax7, no...

Anyone try the Groove Tube 6CA7 GE?

Don't know how close they are to the GE but I still have a pair of Mesa branded Sylvania 6CA7s from when I owned a Mark III Simul-Class MANY years ago. I have put them in a Music Man amp and they sounded stellar, also put one in my Frenzel Champ Plus for a few minutes and that was a purty ol'...

    Maverick help!

You want the short head for rack mounting. It came in a 1-12" and a head version. The long head is great too but too wide for a standard rack. It came in a 2-12, a 4-10 and a head. Easiest way to tell a short head is the Bright/Fat switch and the Channel switch are tucked away on the BACK...

LSS owner, help me identify this "mystery screw"

The screw is there to keep things nice and tight. If you remove the mounting screws for the head it will drop down enough to slide it out without harming the sheilding foil. Don't mess with it unless it is tormenting you in some way.

My experiment will be tested tonight - Subway Blues gigging

I jammed at the club for two sets with some friends. I had a Peavey Scorpion 10" speaker instead of the stock speaker - a major upgrade. Still not enough power, I could have used your extension cabinet. It sounded great on stage but did not quite carry the day out in the house. Of course if it...

    best clean channel?

Blue Angel. You can dial just about any clean tone you can name out of one. With the Fat/Bright switch and the Progressive Linkage alone there are 6 distinct and beautiful sounds. Then there are the tone controls, you cannot get a bad sound out of this amp! You will not find a hater for the Blue...

    Burstbucker Pros or Emgs

I have installed at least 200 EMG pickups in guitars, my own and customers. I only use them for anything I am playing professionally. Most people don't try the right pickups for the tone they want and the advice given in the installation instructions is not favorable to some types of tones...

Subway Blues kicking some major tail , but still needs help

I found a complete reverb unit from a Mesa on ebay for about $25 shipped. I needed the tank and cords for my Maverick but the padded bag is now in my Subway Blues. Take a look at how Mesa mounts the reverb tank in their premium amps, there is a plywood sheet guarding the open side of the tank...

anyone ever seen inside of a mesa blue angel?

Probably priced favorably for the amp owner because it was an imperfect circuit. I need to send mine in for noise, that part is probably the culprit. They have retrofitted quite a few Subway Blues with noisy potted circuitry also. I have a later version of that amp, they stopped putting that in...

Has Anyone Ever Blown A Power Tube During A Show?

No, have lost a preamp tube or two though. For now, I put my Maverick on top of a 160 watt Peavey bass head. The head is plugged it to the AC mains at the gig. If the Mav goes down I can plug in the speaker and input in less than a minute and use the distortion preset on my pedal widget to...

How rare or valuable are STR415s?

Leave your tubes in there and hang on to the unused set. Worst case scenario is the NOS set will continue to go up in value. If your amp sounds good don't change it. For some weird reason I have a single STR415. I also have a lightly used pair (one pair each) of Mesa EL34s and EL84s, made in...

Vintage Guitarist needs "Modern Amp" help

+1 x 10 on the Maverick. I am an old school post-Hendrix rocker and I play in a Motown tribute band. They let me play as "outside" as I want - gives a new spin to some tunes but we have fun and people are dancing. Anyway, I have owned a few Mesas and played on many more. The Maverick is one of...

Fender Vibro Champ XD Guitar Combo Amp

Get the little one and cram a good 10 inch speaker in there. With a good speaker 5 watts is pretty loud. You want that single ended tone, it has a purity that cannot be matched by push-pull circuits. Up grade the output tranny and it should sound totally great. The 6v6 is the way to go for a...

Fender replace neck builders out there?

PRS is a 25 inch scale, Fender Strat is 25.5. You really need to do your homework before you have to endure my motto: "One modification leads to another." or worse yet, my Dad's motto: "Cut it off twice and it's still too short?" :D :) :(

    LSS Well built!

Not quite the same situation but I was gigging with my trusty Peavey "Pile" (could not quite achieve the status of a stack). I had an LA 400 (210 watts - 1 12" Black Widow) and on top a Reknown (160 watts -1 12" Scorpion Plus) fired up and the drummer stumbled and knocked the Reknown off the top...

    New Aquisition - Gibson 335-S

The mass is not the problem, it is what your strings are now attached to: a skinny piece of metal suspended by a pin and positioned with a fugitive (non-locking) thread. There is no solid contact between the string and the tailpiece. I have been repairing guitars for 30+ years and have swapped a...

The First Amp You Ever Played On A Live Gig?

I was 14 and some friends were playing a teenage dance party. They heard I could play and asked if I could play bass. I said yes even though I had no idea. The drummer's parents had bought a lot of equipment at this one music store and the dad taught music at the university. So they demoed a new...

    New Aquisition - Gibson 335-S

This is one of the sleeper Gibsons for sure. If I am not mistaken they were solid maple? I know that the 2 or 3 I have seen were. Heavy, played like a Gibson and nice looking. If it were mine I would replace the fine tuner tailpiece, it is a tone-suck. A heavy, solid metal tailpiece will put you...

    The Maverick

Now that I am back in a band my 1-12 Maverick is my gigging amp. I use the same output tubes and rectifier as 212Mavguy (we are old friends). I love the straightforward simplicity and the amazing versatility of this amp. I have a JBL g125 in mine and it sounds fantastic. The Black...
