    Mark III noisy lead channel

I found the Tungsol in V1 to be very bright and powerful. Stepped down to a NOS RCA gray plate from the 1950s to cut that harshness. If the other channels are quiet, it could be V3, but maybe it's just your settings or other influence? Are you kicking in the EQ with a drastic curve on ch3? Huge...

Digging this new setting on my Mark III

There are a few stereotypical nasty zones on most MkIIIs that you learn to avoid. Most if them involve, a.) the ice pick, b.) the mud zone, and c.) flub. Speakers play a huge part in where those areas lie, but because the tone controls are so flexible, they are there in a big way. The bass...

    New Mark III owner

Or a pair of vintage 2x12s will do the same job. And if you get complacent, start experimenting with NOS preamp tubes. I recommend an old RFT in V3 for some serious darkness.

What cab and speaker combo for classic rock w/Mark V

I like WGS speakers with my MkIII to cut the high frequencies that the C90s let thru. Specifically the ET65+Vet30 combination. Very classic but will still crunch out when you want to. Do you gig this rig? If so, having 2 1x12 cabs can be nice to vary your venue volume. If not, then just get the...

    Mark IV w/ 6v6s versus lone star w/ 6v6s

Maybe I'm wrong but it's going to pretty tough to get a 6V6 tone out of a 6L6 in a MkIV. And unless you use something like a Yellow Jacket adapter (which only does EL84s, I think) -again, not factory warranty friendly - I wouldn't know of a way to retrofit a 6V6 into a 6L6 amp without serious...

Mesa Boogie Rectifier 2x12 cab speaker change

I can't improve on that! 8) The ET65 in the top position smooths out the ice pick found in other speakers.

How much work to remount my MKIII combo in a head cab?

George's work abso-freakin-lutely rocks! 8) I was fortunate enough to find one used and the build quality is excellent. Don't even consider an alternative. And no, I won't sell mine. ;)

    Mesa 4x12 standard cab

    I'm confused...are you looking at a 4x12 or a 2x12? Is this a vintage half-back vertical cab? Like this?

    Post your rig part 2

My Boogie stack grew in an odd way... The Super Dallas and MkIII actually make really good stable mates. 8)

Pics of my MK III - Just for fun

Nice! I take it you play something other than Metallica if you put a JBL speaker in it. ;)

What speaker is your 1x12 combo loaded with?

    Yep. After V30s, C90s, and EV12Ls I finalized on a WGS ET-65. Sweet results.

How much work to remount my MKIII combo in a head cab?

If you need to mount the fan and reverb tank, it takes a little more time. Took me about 45 minutes with 2 mods to the reverb tank install. Cake.

So, Should I MOd My Mark III?

My MkIII still doesn't have the R2 mod. After 23 years I'm just not missing it. However, if I were back in a modern rock cover band, I'd do it in an instant for the flexibility. The classic rock gig doesn't demand it, so much.

    mark III settings

+1 After a while you start to realize that everything you tweak ends up sounding the same. I ended up turning every knob to zero, defeated the GEQ and started from scratch. My personal challenge was to find an awesome, different tone with completely different settings while being a good...

    Thiele VS Recto 1x12

When you're playing 20+ year old gear, this is all good info. 8)

    Thiele VS Recto 1x12

Here's another perspective... The Thiele cabs are spectacular and were originally designed as add-on to the combo and an alternative to a 4x12. The EV in the Thiele cab is stellar. But at gig volumes, I couldn't get control of the bottom end and preferred my 2x12 half-backs. And in the spirit...

    cab/speaker question and advice

IMO, there's a laser beam from every speaker/cab. And in the spirit of full disclosure, I pursued a solution exactly as you proposed...twin vert 2x12 half-backs with C90s. In smaller venues where I didn't want the big projection, using one cab on its side forced the beam to my feet and under...

    Swap a 4X12 for a 2X12 or single 12?

+1 Even at lower volumes, a great 4x12 is unmatched. Just yummy. I made the leap to 2x12 cabs many years ago and schlepped 2 of them around for even out outdoor gigs with great success. But I'm downsizing my rig and am selling one of my old school Boogie half-back 2x12s. If by some weird chance...

    Mesa boogie mkiic+ kit

Doug Sewell over at PRS is using the same technique on a couple of his amp designs to squeak out a little more gain. Since the other half of the reverb tube is unused, why not? It's not exactly a secret weapon, but instead of loading an extra tube, just use the part that's just sitting there...

What value LED is used in FU-3 Footswitch?

There are no values to LEDs. Completely interchangeable with each other. Just keep the polarity straight and you're in good shape.
