I absolutely love my blue stripe, but I have started to wonder if I would prefer to have the ability to transport it as a head and then my choice of cab (depending on the gig). Is it a huge deal to rehouse the thing in a head cab?

Its not a big deal at all: Remove the tubes. Remove 4 screws on top. Slide the amp out. Slide it in the head cab. Replace 4 screws. Replace tubes.

If you need to mount the fan and reverb tank, it takes a little more time. Took me about 45 minutes with 2 mods to the reverb tank install. Cake.

Thanks so much guys. Does anyone have a recommended source for reasonably priced head cabs beyond eBay? What's a reasonable price for your typical non bubinga cab?

Contact GTS or Mesa/Boogie directly for a head cabinet. Plan on spending about $300 for a new one, $200+ for a used one if you can find one.

George's work abso-freakin-lutely rocks! 8) I was fortunate enough to find one used and the build quality is excellent. Don't even consider an alternative. And no, I won't sell mine. ;)

I also have a blue stripe, and recently decided to go with a head conversion. I had a friend ask me if I was sure I wanted to lose the portability of a combo, so I told him to pick the amp up one inch off the ground, and does it and just goes, "oh."

I got my head shell from George (gts on this board) and I am quite pleased with it. There is plenty of testimony to his work, you wouldn't be disappointed.

As to your question, it was not very hard to switch the amp over, but there were tricky spots with the fan and such. Mesa really crams the stuff in there, but it was kind of fun seeing how they put it all together.

I did like the sound of the combo, but I like my 2x12 vertical recto better, and that's pretty much what I always used anyway.

If you want a head, go for it!
