Studio .22 love story - speakers and mods I've tried

Hi all, I have a .22+ with EQ, been using it as my main gig amp for more than 20 years. I've done the lead drive mod and put a 12AY7 in V1. I currently use a 15W Celestion alnico blue speaker, also tried a Greenback and Mesa MC90, but the blue is most to my liking. Don, would you be willing...

    Studio 22+ volume falls down

This is most likely caused from a bad connection in the effects loop input jacks due to oxide and dirt. It is a "standard" problem on these amps, I had it on mine too. Try putting a patch cable in the effect send/return and see if this helps. You can spray some electronics cleaner into the...

    Studio .22+ and Celestion Blue?

I have a blue in my .22 and it sounds great. No problems with the too high power, but I don't play it at very high volume. Have used it at several gigs though.

    LCC US-EU Voltage conversion

I'm not sure if you're asking about the Classic or Special, but Tube Amp Doctor has a replacement transformer for the Special. I have one on order for my LSS. http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_46&products_id=1422

Studio 22+ are Class A correct?

Well, it is labelled Pure Class A but I really think it is hot biased class AB (fixed bias). I´ve got one too by the way, and I think it is a great sounding amp. I replaced the stock speaker with a Celestion Blue which was an improvement IMO. Also have a Lonestar Special equipped with a Weber...

    Power transformer replacement

I’m going to replace the power transformer in my Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special to a 230V version, since this amp was brought from the U.S. to Europe when I relocated. So far, I’ve located two sources that have a replacement available; Mercury Magnetics and Tube Amp Doctor. Do you know of any...

    LSS and NOS EL84's

How hot does the LSS run the power tubes? Is it safe to plug in a quad of NOS EL84's without checking current draw? Which NOS EL84's would you recommend for the LSS?

    Matched tubes?

How critical is it to have closely matched output tubes in a cathode biased amp such as the LSS? I have several sets of NOS tubes that I would like to use, but don't know how good they would be matched together. I also have some of the Mesa labelled EL84's, but these are all bought as singles.

    Studio 22+ mod

Thanks for the schematics for the gain mod. I too would be interested in how to modify the Studio .22 for variable bias, I'm quite sure it's not cathode biased but fixed bias.

    DC-5 DC-5B difference

What's the difference between these two versions of the DC-5?

    4 el84's 50 watts???

I'm not sure how the .50 has been advertised, but the cal .22 which also is class AB, has a Class A label on the rear.

    Blue Angel and pedals

Can anyone tell me if the Blue Angel sounds good together with OD-pedals? I'm thinking of buying a BA after reading good things about it, but would like to have the ability to get some variations in the overdrive. I'm not looking for heavy metal, but rather a MkIV type sound. My current OD...

    Got my Studio .22+ today!

Then I would go for the 12AU7. I also did not care too much for that oversaturated sound, which the lead channel produces with the original 12AX7 tube for the lead channel gain stage. The 12AU7 allows you to dial in a nice, slightly overdriven sound on the rhytm channel, with a very warm...

    Got my Studio .22+ today!

Congratulations! It's a great amp. I have used tubes from Mesa, Ruby and now JJ's. Don't expect a huge difference in sound just by changing brands, but try out different types of preamp tubes. I'm currently running a 12AU7 in the V1 position, which in my opinion gives a much better balance...
