I'm waiting for "themailmanpsycho" to get back to me about buying his studio pre but I'll also need a power amp to go with it.
'm shooting for an authentic mark tone so I want to get a mesa amp to match up with the preamp.
I know the 2:90 is the bad mamma jamma and all that but through searches here, I've read that it's just retarded loud and I don't play gigs where I need stupid quantities of volume at my disposal. I DO plan on running it stereo with my gmajor's stereo effects and a pair of 2X12's so I'd be using both channels of the amp.
I've heard that the old 50/50 has a more desirable sound than the 2:50 and that some people even prefer the 2:20 with the EL84's over the higher wattage versions but I'm not sure if that would give me the tightness and the power I need for the chunky metal stuff (but I'm sure I could be wrong).
So anyways, some of you mesa power amp owners, speak up. What are the pros/cons of the different mesa amps?
I'm shooting for a ballpark petrucci "score" tone and I know he used 2:90's but I'm also not planning on filling stadiums any time soon.
How reliable are the 50/50's? Any specific problems that they're known to have?
