Hi!

I got my new 3ch Dual Rectifier a couple of weeks ago. But I wasn't quite satisfied with the DR with my Marshall quad loaded with two G12M and two Vintage 30s.

So I sold it. Yeah, the Marshall cab, not Recto :p

Now I'm building a vented cab (like the Genz Benz G-flex 212, slightly bigger though). I was wondering if anyone here has any experience of EVM-12L in a 2x12" vented cab? I know it's heavy at least :) I bought one of those and I'm looking for another too. How does EVM-12L sound with Recto in a normal closed cab? G12M was too muddy even with the two V30s in the cab, I don't want anything like that.

It's my first post here, so hello eveyone!

Welcome :D
The EV's sound great with Recto's, I run 2 of them in a Halfback Cab- Open top half with Ported/Closed back bottom, and they sound huge and punchy. The EV's will definitely not sound muddy.

i would consider building a vented cab not a ported cab (which is what you described)... ports both tuned and untuned have a boomy quality when it comes to rectos so unless thats what your going for go the way of long vents rather than ports... also ports have a tendency to whistle if not tuned correctly.... if you look at the designs of something like a Freda Live cab or a Port City Wave cab, they have long slots rather then circular ports.... freda cabs sound awesome when combined with a standard closed back cab.... port city waves sound amazing too.... so i would say unless you like the ported effect of a cab like the genz or the ear candy cabs, go with a vent.... also take a look at the thiele construction... those are also finely tuned vents.

Sorry, I didn't know the difference between porting and venting.

Porting is what I meant. I don't think I'll try building a vented cabinet, as I have no idea of tuning those. I do know how to tune a ported cabinet. Is it really that boomy, when correctly tuned?

with low gain and clean amps no..... but i found with high gain, especially ones with a lot of bass (recto/5150) the ported cabs have a very boomy, directional characteristic to them..... and thats even when tuned correctly.... also with a vented cab, for the most part they're not tuned... only vented ones ive herad of being tuned are thieles.... the freda's and the port city waves are considered detuned vented cabs..... i've heard both with rectos and they sound great.... again its just a suggestion... you might be better off doing the ported cab because you already know how to do it.... whatever the case post some pics along the way.... it'd be cool to see all the stages of a cab being built

Freda Cabs has this blurb at the bottom of their Design page. The book they refer to is only about $20 or so. Check it out:

Freda Cabs incorporate ideas described by Kevin O'Connor in his book "London Power: DIY Speaker Cabinets for Musical Instrument Applications". For more information contact http://www.londonpower.com

So simply...

I could do it like this: http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8011/etulevy2yw8.jpg I'd just make one wide opening in the front, and that's it? Nothing else required? My cabinet is angled to reduce standing waves, does it affect venting?

Insted of porting it like this http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9275/etulevyeq4.jpg

EDIT: It currently looks like this: http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/9953/kaappi3qt9.jpg

The Freda and Port City designs include a 45 degree dadoed board at the top that reflects the sound downward, which hits another board that in turn shoots the sound out through the vent.

yeah thats basically the freda/port city design... except the port city has a angled panel in the top back of the cab to reflect the sound waves towards the vent..... either way i've found that design to be better for multi-directional sound which is normally attributed to open back cabs, except the cab sounds tighter since the back is closed..... pics look awesome so far..... keep the pics coming as you make progress and let us know how the final product sounds... what kinda speakers you throwing in that bad boy?

btw, i've never seen a ported cab with an angled baffle..... i'm not sure why no one has tried it.... maybe the baffle stays stronger if its straight due to the fact there is a vent in it.... i dont see anything wrong with an angled baffle though... maybe some of the more experienced can chime in on this??

How about this:

I'll make holes for reflex ports, but try it first without any reflex ports, just the holes. If I'm not satisfied with it, I can then tune it.

I got one EVM-12L speaker, it's in the last pic. I'm getting the other speaker next week, it's a different series EVM-12L (couldn't find two of the same used, I don't think there's that much difference, and I can always put the microphone on the bettersounding speaker :))

the PCW definitely has the 45 degree dadoed board but i'm pretty sure the freda does not

I finished her quickly today, because I need her in a band practice tomorrow. She still needs the mesa tolex and grille. Tomorrow I'll know how she sounds.

There's a clip. Just quickly miced with a Sennheiser e606 and played on some Tool backing track found on google.
