Howdy,

I’ve really enjoyed getting into these early marks (II and III). It’s the sound I’ve sought for literal decades. I’ve done the work and sent them home for upgrades and updates…have them lined up with proper tubes (at least to my ear)…and now we begin the speaker portion of the journey. I have a 2x12 recto I bought years ago for my mark V. A fine enough cab for that head, but a let down with my II and III (the IV is ok with it for the most part). Something about those v30s did not settle. I have an 80’s metal grille 4x12 that I Frankenstein’d w 2 EVM’s, a V30 and a C90. It sounds great actually, but it’s specific as to where that great sound is happening. Gotta be in the path so to speak. When you are in it, it’s glorious. Out of it is subpar.

My 2x12 w the v30s is wider but was a little too shrill for my IIb and III. I elected pull one of the v30’s and put a c90 in (the road king idea but closed back). To me, this sounds amazing. If you are bored give it a go! Loving the tone I’m getting in the home tone lab. Now when I take it to my practice space, I’m certain all will be ejected and I’ll need to start over (it’s a horrid space sonically and it leaves me bewildered every time lol).

Chasing tone is a disease. This is known.

+1 Yea man I am totally with you on that. I modded my Recto cab ala the Road King soooo much better :) for me a v30 is best when paired with something else.

Great to know! I have 2 - 2x12 vertical rectifier cabs with another on the way. The black one sounds amazing because it is nice and broken in. The blue one sounds shrill, probably because the previous owner never used it. That cab is getting a remake when my new grill gets here and will be dropping in a Scumback m75 and a Celestion G12m-65 Creamback. So, when I get my new white 2x12 vertical, I may pull a v30 and drop in a c90 like you suggested.

Oh I'll be interested in your take on that. I have a spare Heritage G12-65 laying around and was thinking what to do with it. According to this Zilla vid they are a bit different. TBH the difference is slight to my burnt ears, maybe a little more bottom end with the G12m.

G12m-65 vs G12-65

FWIW I pinged Jim from Scumback on a pairing for the Heritage G12-65, he recommended the H75-LD 65w. I dig my Scumback M-75, had it in the Stiletto Ace cab but later swapped it with the C90 in the 2x12. I think the M75 was a slightly better match with the v30, but not by much. Certainly not enough to swap em back again.

I really like Mark IIIs and I came around to liking V30s, but I could never get them to play nice together in the room (recording, sure, you can do anything and these days I am 95 per cent IRs anyway.) Too many mid spikes in one place.

I have an oversized 2x12 with a Mesa V30 and a Swamp Thang that sounds decent for heavy crunch on R2, but that's about it.
