Triple Rectifier safe with 120W 2x12 cab?

I haven't had much luck finding information on this in the archives, so I thought I might as well ask... apologies if it's rather newbie to do so, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

So here I am, all gung ho to get a Recto 2x12 and actually start playing the amp I've so long wanted, when it dawns on me... "Wait, the cab is 120W, and the amp is 150W... #$%@$"

Which leads me to ask - would this setup be safe to use? I really, REALLY don't want to blow anything up.

I'd say yeah with a power soak of some kind. No without it.

I'd contact Mesa direct to find out. Just curious why you'd want a 150w combo essentially?

Yeah, I'm hoping that I can pull tubes and run it at 100W. The problem is the ever-conflicting accounts of that technique's results on the Ohms of the Triple; some say it's okay, others... not so much. In another post on the board, I remember reading that Mesa said it was okay, but seem to recall them saying otherwise in the manual. I've emailed them, regardless, so we'll see what they say this time.

I **** sure know that I don't need 150 watts - getting a Dual was my plan, and even that was overkill, but a Triple came up locally for a decent price, and, in my excitement and haste to get set up before an important recital later this month, I didn't factor everything in before I picked it up. The problem is that I bought it with a broken shell, knowing it would need work, and now it'd be almost impossible to sell off again.

For what it's worth, here's the word from Mesa:

The 2x12 recto cab should still be able to handle the Triple, but if you still want to pull tubes this is how you do it.

Pull the 2 outer most 6L6's and any one of the rectifier tubes. So you should be left with 4 6L6's and 2 Rectifier tubes.

You can leave the cab 8 ohm cab in the 8 ohm jack OR you can plug the 8 ohm cab into the 4 ohm jack of the amp. With this amp it isn't crucial that you change the impedance around, that mainly goes for our Duals. Hope that helps.

If you're happy with the sound that way, you can use the Spongy power setting, this reduces the power a bit. When using Tube Rectification you also have slightly less output. Don't know exactly how much though and this will change the sound (which you may like or not).

Oh yeah, that was always the plan. I've got a local cab builder who's likely going to be doing it for a good bit less than the standard Mesa cost, though, which was quoted to be $300USD+shipping with 8-10 weeks wait.

I'm still not sure what I want to do with it after its been re-furbed, though; I'd be better served with a Dual, but by the time it's done I'll likely lose a chunk of cash on the sale of the Triple.

your cab will handle it...... to blow a speaker you'd have to turn your output to ungodly levels..... when i had my tr through a mesa 2x12 rated at 120 watts its was nothing short of fantastic..... overpowering your cab actually helps you fully saturate the speakers which helps them run efficiently..... just my .02

mmmm... you can also set the bypass so you'll be able to tka out the master and solo output ... i guess that can reduce the volume at least 20%

now ... i'm running my tr with a marshall 2x12 1930 wich is rated at 150w and i called the guys at mesa and they said that it was ok but i won't be able to turn the volume up (master)to a 60 or 70% (and i don't really think my ears are gonna stand that)
