I play Floydish and metal music...

I have a couple recent model Theile 1x12's (standard "cube" size with C90's) that I use for wet effect cabs, and my stock Mark V combo for dry tones.

I recently A/B'd the stock combo vs. the Combo + 1 Theile together. Felt like I lost the mid characteristics that I have grown to love about the combo.

I then tried the Theile alone.. Same trouble... The Theiles seem very focused (obviously vs the open back they would..), but something about the mids is lost, or perhaps obscured by the "boomy" nature of the Theile.

Does anyone else happen to like the Combo sound vs. external cabs?

no, i like the thiele + combo the most of the options you listed.

of course it all depends on what sound you want.

I find I need the Theile with the combo to get enough low end.

Yes, I agree about the low end.. I may not have missed it if I hadn't tried the Theile...

...but I feel the Theile also adds a biting upper mid or treble sound...

Could it be that the Theile's driver is not as broken in as the Combo's?

What speakers do you have in your Thieles? I have a very old EVM-12L. My Thiele is rather dark, and has little top end, compared to the combo.

My Theiles are about a year old, and therefore have C90's installed. I have heard so many amazing things about the EVM 12L's.. I'd love to try one in my cab, but they are quite difficult to find. I have read that the classic reissue is as good as the original... and quite expensive.

Any other speaker suggestions before I give up on the Theiles?

The thiele is made for the EVM-12L, and the speakers can be found used.
