Are there any real differences in the sound between the two amps, or is it more of a features difference.?

Yep, that's easy...

.50 Caliber sounds awesome ('cause I've got one!)

DC-5 sounds gay ('cause I cant afford one!)

No, seriously...

The DC-5 has seperate EQ and Gains so it is easier to balance the channels and is a tad more versatile but, IMHO, is less 'ballsy' and raw than the .50 Cal.

I prefer the .50 but the DC-5 is clearly better if you need many different sounds within easy reach.

They're both great! :D

.50 Cal is a great amp.
Extremely warm cleans.
Great distortions, but you sacrifice clean headroom if you turn the gain up too high.
Reverb is nice.

DC-5
Cleans are more sterile.
Distortions can be really brutal or bluesy or anywhere in between.
Reverb is nice.

Had both.
I kept the DC-5, only because my .50 Cal had to be cranked a bit to sound good. At the time I wasn't playing with anyone and simply using it in my music room was too much. The DC sounded better at lower volumes.

Now that I have a band again, I just might pick up a .50 Cal again. Great amp for cheap.
Mike B. at Mesa says that the EL-84 models are much more aggressive than the 6L6's.
