Not true. They make it cathode-biased Class AB. There's a useful rule of thumb when it comes to guitar amps... if it says Class A, it isn't :).

Neither do they make your amp sound like a Vox. There's much more to the sound of an amp than the type of power tubes or even the bias type.

But apart from that, they work very well. They reduce the maximum power and headroom, increase compression and harmonic distortion, tighten up the low end, and do give more of a 'small amp' sound, while still being basically the same amp as you had before.

It has been awhile since I have pulled my set out, but I remember no having a good experience when I put these in my Marshall. I put two YJ's into my 100 watt Marshall. You know the old trick of pulling out two tubes to reduce the output of the 100 watter, I did that and put in the YJ's. Now, maybe I should have had 4 YJ's in their instead of 2. I could see that giving me a problem. I really need to try again.

i have brought a set of yellow jackets for my f50 with 2 pairs of matched jj EL84's tubes. so far very impressed as it sounds the same as the mesa 430 6l6's with the master set to 10 oclock.
Im going to a jam sessions which will be the real test im hoping the will sound warmer than the 6l6's at a friendly volume.
