what type of tape do you guys use to mark where to place the mic on a cabinet grill? and how do you do it? do you make a square and place the mic in the center or just a piece of tape and put the mic over it.

You would want to place it around the area you point the mic at, but really, there isn't really any process to it. I don't really like to cover up the speaker grill because it limits you later on if you want to move (if you're moving the mic into the area that's covered by tape). Also, depending on what studio/venue you're in, mic placement may need to be changed because the same placement might respond differently depending on the room. I usually put tape on the cabinet itself at the top and side to mark the placement if needed, and I'll scribble notes on another piece and put it on the head (amp settings, mic notes, distances, etc).

On another note...get Charetta back in the studio as soon as possible. The EP is great (I gladly purchased the downloadable version), but I want to hear more. Go...now...I demand it!!

yeah, in the studio i would first find the best possible placement for the mic and then tape it around, but didn't know if there's a special tape that is used for that or not.

the reason i asked is caused at shows, the soundguy would just come and stick the mic in front of the cab not even bothering where the speaker cone is. one time this guy placed the mic in the center of the cab !!! when i moved it he got upset!!!

that's a good point. thanks! i already have the tape on the amp settings sitting on top of the amp.

i've been using marshall cabs and the grill is more of a "see-through" so it's a bit easier to see the cones.. but i just got a MESA cab and the cones are much harder to see, but i'll probably do what you said and just mark if off to the side.
