I'm thinking of swapping out the speaker in my RoV combo. It has the stock C-90 in it currently. It sounds OK but i'm wondering if anything would sound better. Not interested in the weight of an EV, so looking for something else. A V30 is what comes to mind, but i'm wondering what else is out there that compliments the Recto even if it's not the normal Mesa type speaker...

I'm loving my extension cab with the V-30's, but I've never tried it as a replacement for the C-90.
The past week or so I've been playing with my 2x12 closed back, V-30's, along with another 1x12 Greenback, not using the C-90 at all.
I've been toying with the idea of converting my combo to a head/1x12 cab, but I'm not sure how to go about it yet.

Just curious, but do you find the C-90 by itself kind of........mushy? (for lack of a better word)

I really am not a fan of the C 90, but I love the Vintage 30. C 90 does seem kind of mushy and bassy in a bad way (not terrible, though).

I'm beginning to think that mushy is a good way to describe it as well... I may put in an ad looking for someone to trade a V30 for my C90 this weekend... If there are any other speakers from other manufacturers that are popular hit me up with those as well!

Hey just noticed you have the voodoo mod on your RoV. How's that sound?! I bet it sounds amazing. Also, I tried to locate that speaker on the Weber website and I can't find a description for it...

I'm still trying to find out what all is out there so I can make an informed decision....

Then it would look like this:

The middle cab is the original combo, still with stock c90. Bottom is a self build 2x12 v30.
Personally I think that the c90 has to be complemented with another speaker to fully enjoy the ROV. First of all, what is it you don;t like about the c90?

I run my Rectoverb head thru a Recto 2 X12 (V30's) most of the time.
I have an Avatar 2X12 that I bought empty and loaded it with Mesa C90's
and I think it sounds better thru the V30's. It's got more character, I like the C90's better with my JSX, as that's a higher mid heavy amp than the Rectoverb is and the C90's smooth it out really nicely.
I think the V30's add in a little bit of upper mid that the rectoverb needs.

thanks for the replies. I ran across some V30 clones that are intriguing (not to mention half the price of the real ones). There are SEVERAL people who prefer the clone to the real thing. The clone is called a Veteran 30 and is made by Warehouse Guitar Speakers (WGS).

Here's more info on the Veteran 30:

Anyone have any experience with these speakers? I just bought one to experiment with and if I like it enough i'll just keep the C90 so I can put it back in if I ever sell the amp. I'll give an update once I have it installed. For the price I really can't go wrong...

Thanks for all the help fellas!

Adam - I can tell you from past experience that the C90 went well to my ear with a V30 loaded Rectifier 2x12. You can pick up a used Rectifier cab for around $350. I preferred the tone with all three speakers running.

That's what i've heard too. But i'm hoping to find the tone I want with just the combo on it's own. I don't have space in my apartment for another cab or a real need (or the cash) for an extension cab. Otherwise that would be the easiest way to go!

Hey, that's awesome, man! Did you buy the chassis for the head, or build it?

Interesting.... nice setup too. How are the clean's with the V30 cab and c90?

Sorry about that. Didn't realize the link doesn't go to the speaker. Here's some more info and a fresh link: https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/ its in the British Section - 12" Silver Bell. the left section is all the alnico clones and on the right are the ceramics. Ted Weber recommended the ceramic Silver Bell but you know I'm seriously thinking of just getting a new cab now instead because of this thread.

As far as the mod its pretty cool. The distortion is really musical to me, less buzzy distortion (although I was able to control a lot of the buzz with just a route 66 in front). My bandmates compliment me on my tone act practice (other amp is an Orange). The cleans and headroom are amazing and even though the stock ROV probably didn't need it, the mod increases sustain. I just got a Gretsch PowerJet (almost got the JP6 instead... was in my final 3 and a fantastic guitar as well) and the amp just screams with it. Mesa's are the best amps for the money and there's wrong with the stock amp. The mod just adds to what's already there in the amp. I like the mod because it makes the ROV more versitile for me (really opens up the EQ to get different clean and crunch tones) and sounds great at low volumes. The mod is definately not for everyone but fortunately worked well for me.

Cleans were very good. Kind of the best of both worlds. The open back with the combo loaded w/C90 while the closed back 2x12 cab gave it some thump.

I just installed the Veteran. It has a different texture to it than the C90, but I like it so far! It's more aggressive and is nice and chunky. The mids are sweeter than with the C90 and the highs have a nice chime to them. It feels less compressed than the C90 - more open somewhat. I had to turn my bass down a bit (from noon to 11:00) to avoid some woofiness, but it sounds great! I'll leave it in for a while and see how it does at a jam session coming up this weekend...
