I've never been crazy about miking amps at gigs, as the sound quality can be all over the shop. Unwanted feedback can also be a problem.

I found the solution for me - Radial JDX DI, which connects between the amplifier and the speaker, then out to the PA. Normal DI's just get the amp, so without speaker interaction sound nasty to my ears.

This thing makes me sound through a PA like a properly miked up cross between a closed back 4x12 and open 2x12. A little different to the 1x12 in my LSS, but for some things actually sounds bigger.

And I'm not connected to Radial in any way, just really pleased it does the job for me.

Just that it's clear, you don't get any speaker interaction when using the DI box between the amp and speaker. I think you mean that you get the power amp as well, not just the preamp (which would be the case when using the Effects Send). Then again, that's what the Slave Out on the Lonestar is for; direct feed to mixing consoles/effects processors. The signal there is tapped directly from the speaker taps, so it would technically do EXACTLY the same what you're using that DI for.

But I guess the JDX DI offers some kind of speaker simulation as well?

A normal DI operates the way you describe, so nothing from the speaker.

The JDX also takes the electical impulses coming back to the amp from the speaker and uses them as well, which when combined with its active filtering to emulate a cross between a closed 4x12 and an open 2x12 means it sounds like a miked speaker of the amp through that cabinet combination. Have a look on the Radial site for their explanation of how it works.

So this is quite different to using the slave out on the LSS, which I found didn't do the job for me with a PA.

I prefer an SM 57 shoved in the grill of my amps.

Im glad you are happy with your setup, as Im sure some other people on here might want a setup like this.

Thanks for sharing.
