Tomorrow I will be Boogie-less for the first time in 6 years. I have been pulled to the dark side. Strong is the allure of Cliff's magical box. On the plus side, you all can expect some great deals on my leftover tubes on the classified section.

Another fallen soldier The Axe-Fx is a great tool. I used mine with the 4 cable method. It allowed you to still use your amp with effects
routed to the front of the amp and the time based effects in the loop. I also set up a preset that used the Effects>amp models into the return of the loop.
That allowed me to use the amps power section as my power amp and still use the same cabinet. You had the best of both worlds that way.
I tried FRFR but ended up going back the regular cabinet. Just seemed more natural than the FRFR way.
There are so many ways to use it and you have to experiment with it. Great unit. Have fun on the dark side.

Thanks! I figure if I don't like it after a while I won't have any problems selling it and finding another Mark. Right now for what I'm doing a head and 4x12 is overkill.

When you decide that you don't like your explorer anymore let me know! :D :D though that will never happen I'm sure

That's comming with me into the afterlife.

I've had my Axe Ultra for about 3 months. It's truly amazing. I am selling my 11 Rack, sold my Pod XT Pro. Guitar Rig 4 lies unused forever. Even my Eventide H8000 & Eclipse are no longer necessary. However, I still love playing my Mesa amps. As great as the Axe amp sims are, the amps are still better. Like Dave P, I've found that the Ultra sometimes sounds a lot better through my various Mesa Cabs w/ a 20/20 for power. I also have Recto Pre, Studio Pre & a Triaxis hooked into 3 20/20s. Using these in combination with the Ultra provides many cool sounds that the Ultra cannot do on it's own. Although I have a nice (Bryston/ JBL) FRFR system, there are many times when micing the cabs w/ tube power works better in the studio.

If volume is the problem (was for me, still can't figure out what to do w/ my Mark 2A--that thing is CRAZY loud!), skip the 50Cal and get a 20/20 for tube power out the back side of the Axe. Eventually, you might want to add a pre (Recto pre is still my favorite) and you have the best of all worlds.

Although I probably use the FRFR more often, one of my favorite rigs is still Axe Ultra> 20/20> stereo 2 x 12 recto cabs (with cabs disabled in Axe of course)

Good news and bad.
First the bad: Anyone waiting anxiously for my Axe Fx review will be disapointed.
Now the good: Mr Mark IV is safe and sound at home with me. I backed out at the last minute. Just couldn't do it. I felt like I was selling one of my kids so I called the trade off and have been playing my amp almost non-stop for the last 12 hours. My next move will be to get either a Pod HD500 of a GSP1101 to run with the Mark IV. That should keep me gasless for a while.

The Prodigal Son turned around in the driveway! Welcome home, now where's that fatted calf...

When I had the Axe-FX I really only used a couple of amp models and a handful of effects, some of which I could have done without but since they where there
I used them. I don't use one anymore because I only use a little reverb and delay in the loop. So the Axe-Fx was more than I needed for my setup.
With the Ax you need to consider which way you are going to use it, selling off you tube amps and cabinets is a pain in the azz and the FRFR system will cost you at least 1500
for something decent. Not to mention the MIDI interface the mixer for use with headphones. MIDI controllers and footswitches... the list goes on.
It can end up being an expensive setup.
You can use it with you current amp but the cab and power amp simulators available it makes you seriously consider FRFR system to get the full benefits. After a while your heads starts to spin
with all the possibilities. All this is great if you can afford it but a lot of people cannot so they sell off there current rigs to go this route.
Some that have gone this route love it and would never turn back, some not.
I cannot speak for the OP but this was my experience.

That was also a major concern of mine. Even after I had the Axe Fx the costs of everything else was going to get out of hand. Two powered FRFR speakers $1400, Mesa 20/20 (for running at practice with a 4x12)$400, rack $150, headphones $50, midi pedal $150, etc.... I'll just buy a cheapy modeler that I can drop cash for and not have to flip gear to get. Probably the HD500. That way I can run my Mesa with it in 4CM, record direct, use it live if the venue has a good PA with monitors, and keep the GAS pains at bay for a while. Ah, good to be home! 8)

This is my first post on the BB.

Your situation reminds me of something I read a long time ago. In an interview with a keyboard player in a band - can't recall who, but it was someone you'd remember - the leader of the band was talking about the keys player buying a brand new, Yamaha DX7 and how amazed he was with the sound. Except everyone in the band was confounded as to why the keyboardist spent all of his time trying to get it to sound like a Hammond B3!

Sounds like you have the guitarist's version of this problem. :)

Yes, of course, but you'll have to submit to random testing.
Here, pee in this cup.
