same ol Fight 2 channel duel vs. 3 channel

I know this has been beaten to death but in a metal environment, Drop b tuning, what’s the tonal difference between the 2 channel duel rect vs the three channel. I am talking about an avg of both amps, Not Pre-500 2 channel etc. If We had to avg the two amps out which would be the difference? Bass response? Does one hit more upper mids then lower? Volume, Clarity etc. What do you guys think? I have a two channel voodoo modded pre-500 that totally rips *** im thinking about picking up another duel rect to run together so i was wondering what your feelings are towards both.

I couldnt be more pleased. I have a shitload of gear. Mark IIIC+, Diezel vh4, Krank Krankenstein,Randall rg100, verious pre-amps etc. the only thing that comes close to touch it is my voodoo modded 5150.
I mean to me the stock pre500 sounds amazing, but it took that buzzynes/wasp type thing outta it. The amp is def heavier, Has a more usable type of gain, Its brutal as all hell, When i hit a harmonic or play arpeggio type of chords dist its breaks through the mix. My other guitar players amps cant touch this thing. My fav part about it, It still sounds like a rectifer but just so much better. In the words of the producer im currently recording with "Its like this thing is running through expensive preamps right outta the box" Im now selling my diezel and getting another 2 channel or three channel recto done prob with el34 tubes and having them mod it alittle different so i can run it with the one i currently have. Thats why i was asking the difference between the 2. I wanna hear what the three channel guys have to say for peeps who played both.

The 3-channel models have a harshness in the high end that adds to the amp's "brutality". This harsh quality enters the sound once the gain passes about 9:00. (This is from my experience. If anyone wants to contest this be my guest.)

Personally I love the harshness for riffing, but for leads forget it! The 2-channel models are voiced a bit darker and will still sound great for riffing, but in my opinion the 3-channel heads were what Mesa originally envisioned for the brutal Recto sound.

Since you're just talking about detuned riffing, the 3-channel would be the best choice if I were you.

I think the 2 channel amps are better all around. I had a 3 channel Dual that I sold for my 2 channel Triple, and I'm very happy with my choice. There's definitely an added harshness in the 3 channel Rectos, but to me it's very non musical and flat out annoying. My 2 channel sounds incredible in comparison; maybe a little darker but nothing a little adjustment to the EQs can't compensate for. Rhythm is tighter and less buzzy, and I love the lead tone.

On another note, have you tried a Diezel Herbert? I've heard that paired with a Rectifier, the tone is just monstrous.

No i have not tried the herbert have you?, It might be an idea. Im dumping my vh4 i am totally not happy with it. The sound is just soso with the drop b ****. But the higher you tune it the better it sounds you know. Just not for what i am doing. Before i dump the head i will be rebiasing and putting sed el34 winged c's in there. THey are supposed to be alittle better and not as mushy so we will see. How are those basson cabs? Better then the boogie over sized 4x12straight/slant?

I think the VH4 is more of an old school metal amp. The Herbert is definitely more modern and no, I haven't tried one myself, but I've heard some awesome tones on recordings (especially in low tunings).

The Bassons? Eh, they're alright. I'm actually looking for a Mesa Rectifier cab; the Basson sounds pretty **** good in person but turns to hell on a recording, at least with an SM57 or e609. I think I just don't like the Eminence Legends very much. For cleans, they're pretty sick, but not for me with distortion the way a V30 is.

I can't imagine how a pre500 can sound better, but your review makes me think otherwise! FWIW, do you know what revision you have? Or serial #? The C's are typically brighter, which may be what you have.

Do you know if the mod is reversible?

16 or 69 i think. Its def pree 100 u know. I cant think off the top of my head, But tom i will check at practice. But im telling you, Im not one to preach but that voodoo mod really kicked ***. Made the amp ten times better, I wanna buy another recto and have them do another mod to it and change the tubes to sed winged 34's u know. So i can have one 6l6 and another voiced alittle bit different with 34's running together. Im still just not decided on what to go with, 2 or 3 channel recto. You know?
