Hi all,
I have an opportunity to pick up an old simulclass 295 for around $500. The seller tells me I can run the thing in the 30watt class A mode into one channel with the other on standby for nicer tones at lower volumes. Does anyone know if this is a safe configuration? Should both channels be connected to a load even on standby?

UPDATE: Well, I picked up that power amp and I'm loving the tone I get using the Class A mode with my ADA MP-1. Does anyone know how to coax a deeper chug-chug out of palm mutes using this thing? My Peavey Classic 120/120 I was using prior had a resonance knob that was really handy. Are there any deep mods for the 295?

I have a 120/120 too, and it's a beast. I don't think Class A El34's can get a big sound like that. I'd run it in Simul to get some 6l6 tone in there.

I don't know much about it, but Eurotubes runs EL34's and KT88's in a 295.

Here's the quote:

Here are a couple of Mesa 295's and a Strategy 400 that we also used the KT88's in. The EL34 sockets in the 295 run pretty hot so even the coolest KT88's I had were pulling 90mA which is too hot so we ran the JJ E34L's in the outboard sockets and the KT88's in the inboard sockets in place of the 6L6's where they pulled a very nice 45mA at 530 plate volts. This combination sounded fantastic! The lows were very deep and tight, the mids were thick and very harmonically rich. The highs were creamy without being at all brittle. Overall the amp was very punchy with a great dynamic.

The 295 is a pretty clean poweramp, meaning it does not really affect your tone or shape it too much.
