I am going to be buying a Roadster here in the next month or two. However, I am debating whether I should get a 2x12 combo or just grab a head and a 4x12 recto. I can pick up a used 4x12 recto with half open back and half closed back.

Any advice?

Head and cab... If over time you can collect a few good cabs its easy to just swap out and have a bigger tonal range.

On paper they're right.....but I love having a combo I can put and my trunk and be done with it. I also have a cab for it for bigger rooms, which broadens up the tonal options nicely.

head / combo. Even if you don't go anywhere, you might want to sell the head or cab one day, and keep the other piece.

Definitely head/cab.

even if you dont plan on going anywhere with it now...things change.

I have a heavy JSX combo...its no fun carrying it.

Which is why I bought my Roadster head with 4x12 Rect cab ...loving it !!!

If your not gigging then go for the head , put if your gigging it sucks to carry a head and cabinet.....unless you have a roadie which in that case get the FULL STACK.

I use a Roadster combo currently and its one heavy son of a ***** at the end of the night. For recording I would go with some smaller combo type rig. I use a Mesa Subway Rocket. SOunds better on tape to me than my Roadster.
