Mesa Thiele 4x12 stack

Has anyone ever tried or even seen a 4x12 or larger stack of 1x12 thiele cabinets? I currently own x5 EVM12L speakers dating from ‘81 to ‘93, the Black Shadow and EV labeled sound pretty different from the plain back OEM ones, but the variety is nice. Anyways, I have x2 thiele cabs but I’ve been very curious about picking up a few more and making a mini wall of doom from thiele cabs but I’m curious if anyone else has tried it yet.

This sounds like a fun project and something I would probably try myself if I had those cabs.

I own 3 X 112, all different: Thiele 112 widebody (23") closed back with c90, an open back 23" with V30 and a 3/4 closed back extra wide (26") with C90. I have tried the paring of 2 and it sounds great (V30 and extra wide body with C90). I now play into the extra wide alone as it is my fav... I am trying to find a good deal on a 212 and probably sell on of the 3 112's I have.

idk why you'd bother, you're just going to end up with the same output wattage but with way higher resistance. the idea of the thiele is that you put a speaker that can handle big watts into a small cab that can put out decent bass if it's pumping, but unless you rube goldberg up a wiring harness you're not going to be hitting any one cab hard enough for it to do its thing and now you'll have phasing issues because you won't be able to line the cabs up perfectly.

also you really want the floor contact with thieles, stacking them's going to wreck it.

this is one of those things where if it was a worthwhile idea people would have been doing it for 30 years already. if you need that much *** just run a full stack. like if I had four thieles I'd probably spend half an afternoon figuring out how to run them all off one head but buying two more cabs just to try it is a waste.

I agree that the built of the Thiele is to pack high wattage into it, and on the floor it sounds best. That doesn't mean you can't run them in parallel or series like a 4X12, one 212 or two, as long as your resistance factor makes sense.
My 112's were just too good on price to pass on them, but I will be thining the heard soon to go on a 212V and later -maybe- start swapping drivers.

As for the phase, it is also a good point... but unless you don't use a 100' speaker cable, I am not sure how you could be out of phase, especially if it comes from the one same amp. I have no knowledge on this.

@pastorofmuppets let us know more about your experiences please. And what amp(s) will you use to drive that wall of doom?

As for the phase, it is also a good point... but unless you don't use a 100' speaker cable, I am not sure how you could be out of phase, especially if it comes from the one same amp. I have no knowledge on this.

I would likely be running either one of my Mark III’s or my IV. With the current pair of thiele cabs I get plenty of volume but the downside of them is they’re very directional. I’m playing tighter and heavier music so open back is not ideal. Going up to quad as well may not solve the issue, but it’s an interesting thought. Also arguably easier to carry x4 1x12 cabs than it is to carry an EV loaded 4x12. To the people above, wiring 4 of them to equal 8 ohms isn’t a big deal, same as an enclosed 4x12 but the harness is external.

The other part of this is it may look cool, I mean isn’t that half of what rock is anyways? Maybe not as cool as a stack of 4x12s though.

For the looks of 4 X 112 vs. a stack of 412's, it just depends on the angle of the camera LOL

True things about the harness of the wires being external... I'd make sure that all speaker cables are the same lenght, AWG and brand, just because I am OCD like that. Obviously you don't want a 100' speaker cable anyway.
