Just wondering if anyone might be able to shed some light on this for me. I was listening to JP in the G3 show in Tokyo and he seems to be getting quite a smooth lead tone through his Road Kings. Can the series 2 get that same smooth tone? Thanks!

Chris

As far as I am aware, channels 3 & 4 are the same in each model of the Road Kings.

I have a Road King II that I sometimes use with a Petrucci BFR and can achieve smooth lead tones with or without a boost. Most of the smoothness comes from the Dimarzio pickups (Crunchlab / Liquifire) although back then I think he was using the Dsonic / Air Norton combo before his signatures came out. They are quite similar pickups either way though. The Liquifire is a very smooth sounding pickup on the high frets. Keeping the treble below 12:00 and the presence completely off in channel 3 vintage I can get a tone that's very similar.

Well this has me in a quandary then, lol. I was going to get an Electra Dyne as I love the smooth yet heavy tones it can achieve with the BB in front of it. Having said that, I love Petrucci's tone when he was using the RK's and that amp is worlds more versatile than the Dyne. Sure wish I could do a side by side with those. /:

These videos might also help, you may have already seen them:

I tried to find videos of what the rectifiers sound like along with the Dimarzio's. It was Petrucci's tone that originally turned me onto Dimarzio and they are my favourite pickups now.
