I went online and found Euro Tubes, they had a package of tubes that sounded interesting so I ordered it.

I was wondering if anyone on here had this setup.

6-6V6s power tubes
3-GZ34 rectifier tubes
They pick out the preamp tubes

Supposedly the power tubes will go into breakup a little quicker than 6L6s

The rectifiers will tighten up the flabbiness of the stock units

Not sure on the preamp tubes

But it will supposedly warm up the clean sound, something Ive kinda been wanting

Make a chunkyer sound

And a better lead sound

Just curious if anyone here has tryed this

Be careful with those 6V6's, a true 6V6 is not designed to run at the plate voltage of a Recto in full power/diode rectified. You would be best to always run in Spongy w/tube rectifiers.

The Triple Recto gets it's "modern roar" from a clean power section, not from powertube breakup. Don't be surprised if the amp sounds less defined at band volumes.

Good luck, I hope it turns out the way you want.

6v6 on a recto its not a good idea!

Thanks for the advice, I plan to run it in Spongy/Rectifier mode, I always do anyway.

I know i have one of the loudest amps on the planet, but my band has cut its stage volume way back the past couple of years, so I really dont need as much clean headroom as I used to, plus I want it to break up a little quicker.

From the descriptions I got from Jay it sounded like the trick for what Im after.

Actually - I have to disagree a bit here

We ran 6V6's in a DR for a LONG time with no issues. Just make sure you don't use bold and silicon diode at the same time.

If you're just going with regular old spongy tube rectification you'll be fine and if I remember correctly you run 6V6's in EL34 mode (check with Eurotube guys on this).

I've had good luck with Eurotubes for the record and they were most helpful and VERY explicit with which combinations of rear panel settings were acceptable.

BUT - I'll tell you this - the difference in output is not really noticeable from 6L6's.

Also - in recent history I've gone back to using all Mesa tubes. Mesa made the amp I'm using their tubes too.

Guys Im close to 50 yrs old, have played in a band with the same guys live for the past 25 years, so I know about volume, I know about attenuators, I just got rid of a Weber, I still own one of the original Sholz power soaks.

I actually play louder practicing by myself than I do with the band. I still have my original SUNN MODEL T head, you want loud that thing is louder than anything else Ive heard thru the years.

I havent had a problem getting good tones out of my recs at any volume level. Got my first Triple back in 91, have had some version of it every since, I do wish I had kept the old 2 channel one I got first.

I got the package today with the tubes so in a day or so if I get some time I will check them out. I just wanted to try something different, who knows I may mix up the 6L6s, 6V6s, and even throw in a pair of my yellowjackets in there and see what happens.

Should be fun

Got to play the Euro tube set last night for a little while.

I wasnt knocked off my ass by any means, but I did like the improvement in my clean channel, it was fully sounding without the spikeyness I had felt with the set I had in there.

I had forgotten but a couple of years ago experimenting I had put a couple of NOS tubes in my V1 and V2 slot, these were some old Westinghouse tubes, I may put one of these back in V1 and see what happens.

I run channel 2 in the raw mode, I did notice that with my previous gain setting the channel did indeed break up sooner, I was able to roll off the gain just a bit, I set it in the 12-1 range, I also noticed that I could use a bit more mid with these tubes. I think I wound up around 11 oclock which is higher than Ive ussually run. This channel gives a real healthy chunky rythym guitar sound, not quite what I would want for leads, but I did punch it with my old Tube Screamer and got a very good lead sound. In fact for you guys with Triple Recs I would encourage you to play around with the Raw setting and distortion pedal, Ive always felt it was my best lead sound anyway.

I run channel 3 in vintage mode. Once again I was able to dial back the gain from around 2 oclock to 12-1. Like I said it breaks up a bit earlier. Im not sure yet on the bass and treble, both are around the noon position, and I did increase the mids, also ramped up the presence more than normal and didnt get that annoying fizziness that I cant stand. Im going to play with this channel a bit more.

I play a Les Paul Classic with stock pups in it, they are very hot, and quickly roll into distortion.

Like I said Im pleased with the sound Im getting but not overwhelmed yet, my wife commented that it didnt sound as harsh as in the past.
